Working Principle

Working Principle

This chapter introduces concepts and working principles of LUN copy.

Related Concepts

  • Source LUN is a LUN where source data resides.
  • Target LUN is a LUN to which data is copied from a source LUN.
  • Local storage device

A storage device in a local storage system. A local storage system indicates an OceanStor 5300 V3/5500 V3/5600 V3/5800 V3/6800 V3/6900 V3 series storage system.

  • Heterogeneous storage system

A storage device in a heterogeneous storage system, which is displayed as a remote storage device on the DeviceManager.

The source or target LUN of a LUN copy can be a LUN on a heterogeneous storage device, therefore you can select the heterogeneous storage device as the source device or target device when creating a LUN copy. A heterogeneous storage system can be either a storage system manufactured by another mainstream vendor or an OceanStor storage system of a specific model. For details, see chapter Restrictions.

  • Backup window is the time for which a host service needs to be suspended for data backup.

Full LUN Copy

A LUN copy session completely copies data from a source LUN to a target LUN. The backup window would be long if the amount of the source data was large. Figure 1-1 illustrates the working principles of LUN copy.
