Introduction

The ET1D2MPUBC01 can be installed in slots 13 and 14 of an S12710 chassis.

Functions

The ET1D2MPUBC01 integrates the control and switching functions and provides the control plane, management plane, and data plane for the system.

  • The control plane provides functions such as protocol processing, service processing, route calculation, forwarding control, service scheduling, traffic statistics collection, and system security.
  • The management plane is responsible for system status monitoring, environment monitoring, log and alarm processing, system software loading, and system upgrades.
  • The data plane provides high-speed, non-blocking data channels for data switching between service modules.

The ET1D2MPUBC01 consists of the following functional modules:

  • Control module: functions as the control plane and management plane for the ET1D2MPUBC01 and the entire system, implementing protocol processing, route calculation, forwarding control, system management, and system security.
  • Switching module: functions as the data plane and provides high-speed service channels for data switching.
  • Local clock module: provides the working clock for the chips of the control module, switching module, and equipment management and monitoring module on the ET1D2MPUBC01.
  • Device management and monitoring module: provides functions of a controller area network (CAN) bus module to monitor the ET1D2MPUBC01 and manage the CAN bus modules of LPUs.
  • Power supply module: provides power supply for the ET1D2MPUBC01.

Redundancy backup

Supported

MPU is a mandatory card for switches. Each switch must be configured with one or two MPUs. When one MPU is configured for a switch, the MPU can be installed in either main control slot of the switch. When two MPUs are configured, they work in hot standby mode to improve system reliability. The two MPUs monitor each other. If the active MPU fails, the standby MPU changes to active state to ensure uninterrupted services.

Hot swapping

Before removing the active ET1D2MPUBC01, perform an active/standby switchover.

Usage Constraints

  • Main control units of different models cannot be used in the same chassis.

  • The fans in a switch work in intelligent speed adjustment mode after a switchover between the active and standby main control units in the switch. If the fans run at a specified speed before a switchover, run the set fan-speed command after the switchover to set the fan speed again.

Fast blinking: An error has occurred when the card is executing the configuration file or reading data from the USB flash drive.

Off: No USB flash drive is connected to the card, the USB port on the card is damaged, or the indicator is damaged.

Steady on: A link has been established on the port.

OFL button

-

Before removing a running main control unit, hold down the OFL button on the card until the OFL indicator blinks red or turns steady red. When the OFL indicator turns steady red indicating that the card is isolated from the system, you can remove the card. When a main control unit is running normally, its RUN/ALM indicator blinks green slowly and its OFL indicator is off.

Blinking: The card is being separated from the system and cannot be removed from the chassis.

Off: The card is running and cannot be removed from the chassis.

RUN/ALM: running status indicator

Green

Steady on: The card has been powered on, but the software is not running.

Slow blinking: The card software is running properly.

Fast blinking: The card software is starting.

Red

Steady on: The card has failed and the fault requires manual intervention.

Yellow

Steady on: The card is powered off.

RST button

Press this button to reset the card.

NOTE:
Resetting a main control unit will cause packet loss. Exercise caution when deciding to press the RST button.

ACT: active/standby status indicator

Steady on: The card is the active main control unit of the switch.

Off: The card is the standby main control unit of the switch.

1 Two BITS ports. Ports CLK1 and CLK2 on the panel map ports BITS0 and BITS1 of the clock daughter card. BITS ports are connected to BITS devices or connected to BITS ports of other products to synchronize the time and clock.
2 Two GE ports (reserved).
3 One USB port. It is used to load software from a UBS flash drive.
4 One console port, used for onsite configuration of the switch.
5 One ETH management port (10M/100M BASE-TX auto-sensing). It can connect to a network port of a configuration terminal or network management workstation to set up a local or remote configuration environment.
6 Four 10GBASE SFP+ optical ports used for cluster connection between two chassis. They are multiplexed with the 40GE optical port. Either the 10GE ports or 40GE port can work at a time. By default, the four 10GBASE SFP+ optical port are used preferentially.
7 One 40GE BASE-X optical port used for cluster connection between two chassis. It is multiplexed with the four 10GE optical ports. Either the 40GE port or 10GE ports can work at a time.
ETH management port

A switch can connect to a configuration terminal or network management workstation through the ETH management port for onsite or remote configuration. The port must use a an Ethernet cable. Table 7-26 describes the attributes of an ETH management port.

Console management port

A configuration terminal or network management workstation connects to the console management port for onsite configuration. The port must use a Console Cable. The console management port is used when a switch is powered on for the first time. Table 7-27 describes the attributes of a console management port.

Each ET1D2MPUBC01 main control unit has two port groups: group 1 with 10GE ports 1-4 and group 2 with 40GE port 1. Two chassis can set up a cluster only when the following requirements are met:
  • One main control unit can only be connected to one main control unit card in the other chassis. It cannot be connected to more than one main control unit in the other chassis or the other main control unit in the local chassis.
  • Ports in group 1 on one main control unit can only be connected to ports in group 1 on the other main control unit. These ports must be connected sequentially based on their numbers. The port in group 2 on one main control unit can only be connected to the port in group 2 on the other main control unit.
  • The two chassis must be connected by at least one cluster cable.
To keep cluster cables neat and facilitate maintenance, you are advised to connect the two chassis according to Figure 7-14 or Figure 7-15:
  • Connect at least two cables on each main control unit.
  • Install two main control units in each chassis.
