Lightning Strike Due to a Lack of Surge Protectors
Symptom
When PoE adapters supply power to outdoor APs at a site, the failure rate of the adapters is high.
Fault Location
The port protection specifications of PoE adapters meet requirements in indoor scenarios, but cannot meet requirements in outdoor or semi-outdoor scenarios. External high voltage causes module failures.
Solution
When a PoE adapter is used to supply power to an outdoor AP, a signal surge protector and an AC surge protector need to be configured for the PoE adapter. For details about how to install a signal surge protector and an AC surge protector, see Installation Guide for Power Supply Surge Protectors.
Summary
In outdoor and semi-outdoor scenarios, PoE switches are recommended for power supply. If PoE adapters are required in special networking scenarios, it is recommended that Huawei surge protection modules be used on the AC ports and PoE ports of the adapters. The distance between a surge protector and a protected device must be greater than or equal to 5 m. In addition, surge protection and grounding must be reliable.
