How Do I Configure Primary and Secondary IP Addresses?

Generally, an interface needs only a primary IP address. In some special scenarios, you need to configure secondary IP addresses for an interface. For example, when a switch connects to a physical network through an interface (only one idle interface is available) and hosts on the physical network belong to two network segments, you must configure both primary and secondary IP addresses for this interface, so that the switch can communicate with all the hosts.

Each Layer 3 interface can have a maximum of 255 secondary IP addresses.

Configure the primary and secondary IP addresses on CE series switches as follows:

On an Ethernet interface, run the undo portswitch command to switch the interface mode to Layer 3 first, and then you can configure IP addresses for it.
