A Ping Operation from a CE12800 Switch to Its Directly Connected Codec Server Fails Intermittently

Keywords

Directly connected, ping, codec server, CE12800, switch

Abstract

A ping operation from a CE12800 switch to its directly connected codec server fails intermittently.

Problem Description

Figure 14-14 Network topology

A CE12800 switch functions as the gateway and connects to a codec server.

Fault Symptom

The CE12800 switch can ping the IP address of its directly connected codec server at the beginning. Later, the ping succeeds intermittently and finally fails.

Procedure

The CE12800's VLANIF 3005 has IS-IS enabled and periodically sends Hello packets by default. The codec server incorrectly processes IS-IS packets, as a result of which, it incorrectly processes ARP requests and ICMP requests. Subsequently, the ping operation on the CE12800 succeeds intermittently and finally fails.

  1. Run the system-view command on the CE12800 to enter the system view.
  2. Run the interface vlanif 3005 command on the CE12800 to enter the VLANIF interface view.
  3. Run the isis silent command on the CE12800 to configure the IS-IS interface as a silent interface.

Solution

Configure the IS-IS interface as a silent interface to disable it from receiving and sending IS-IS packets.

Suggestion

When a CE12800 switch connects to non-network-devices such as servers and terminals, you are advised to disable protocol packets from being sent to avoid the impact of a failure to process these protocol packets.
