Troubleshooting for Packet Loss Caused by Burst Traffic in the Outbound Direction of an Interface

Networking

The server and CE switch are connected through an Eth-Trunk which consists of two 10GE member interfaces.

Fault Description

A QOS/4/hwXQoSPacketsDropInterfaceAlarm_active alarm is generated on the device, indicating that packet loss occurs on the two member interfaces of the Eth-Trunk.

Cause Analysis

  1. Run the display interface interface-type interface-number command in any view to check packet loss information and bandwidth usage in the outbound direction on the Eth-Trunk and two member interfaces.

  2. Run the display qos buffer-usage interface interface-type interface-number slot slot-id command in any view to check whether the buffer is full.

  3. Set Interval to 1 ms to monitor the traffic using the tester Wireshark. The monitoring result indicates that burst traffic occurs and the maximum bandwidth is exceeded.

Procedure

Traffic overload in such scenarios cannot be detected in real time through traffic statistics collection on the device. The peak traffic statistics of an interface is the average value within 5 minutes. Therefore, the traffic statistics collection result of the interface will not reach or exceed the peak bandwidth rate of the interface.

On this networking, you can perform the following measures to resolve this problem:

1. Add member interfaces to the Eth-Trunk to expand the Eth-Trunk bandwidth.

2. If the server supports the traffic control function, enable this function in the outbound direction.
