VM Migration on a VXLAN Network Takes a Long Time

Problem Description

VMs are migrated on the VXLAN network shown in Figure 19-2. During the VM migration, the packet loss duration is longer than 20s, which exceeds the expected value.

Root Cause

EVPN routes are frequently updated, causing congestion in the RR sending queue. As a result, EVPN routes fail to be advertised in a timely manner.

Solution

Perform the following steps to locate and rectify the fault:

  1. Log in to the RR (Spine) and check information about the BGP update-group in the EVPN instance.
    The following command output shows that the value of Group ID is 4.

  2. Check EVPN route advertisement in the corresponding update-group on the RR.
    The following partial command output shows that the value of the UptPeerGrp PktBuffer count field is not 0, indicating that the RR does not complete route advertisement. This indicates that frequent route updates cause congestion in the RR sending queue.

  3. Change the MAC address entry aging time on server leaf and border leaf nodes.
    Log in to server leaf and border leaf nodes, and run the mac-address aging-time aging-time command in the system view to set the aging time of dynamic MAC address entries to 30 minutes (1800 seconds). By default, the aging time of dynamic MAC address entries is 300 seconds.

  4. Run the display bgp evpn update-peer-group index 4 verbose command again to check EVPN route advertisement in the corresponding update-group on the RR. If the value of the UptPeerGrp PktBuffer count field is 0, the RR has completed route advertisement, indicating that the fault is rectified.
