Common Causes

  • The interface is not added to the corresponding VLAN.
  • The STP status of the interface is blocking.
  • A parity check error occurs.
  • The physical link is unstable.
  • The traffic exceeds the bandwidth.
  • A route fails to be delivered.
  • An ARP entry is not learned.

Troubleshooting Procedure

  1. Check whether the interface is added to the corresponding VLAN.
    Run the display vlan vlan-id command to check whether the interface is added to the corresponding VLAN.
    • If the inbound or outbound interface is not added to the VLAN, add the interface to the VLAN.
    • If the interface is added to the VLAN, go to step 2.
  2. Check whether the STP status of the interface is blocking.
    Run the display stp brief command to check whether an interface is blocked.
    • If the STP status of the interface is discarding or learning, check whether loops occur on the network.
    • If the STP status of the interface is forwarding, go to step 3.
  3. Check the status of the physical link.
    1. Check whether the physical line is secured and in good contact and whether the cable works normally.
    2. Run the display interface [ interface-type [ interface-number [ .subnumber ] ] ] command to check Last physical up time and Last physical down time. Check whether the interface alternates between Up and Down based on the two fields.

    • If the physical link does not work properly, replace the cable of the physical link.

  4. Check whether the traffic exceeds the bandwidth.

    • If the traffic exceeds the bandwidth, add a link for load balancing or increase the rate of the interface.
    • If traffic does not exceed the bandwidth, go to step 5.
  5. Check whether broadcast storms occur.

    Check MAC address flapping records. move-ports specifies the interface in a loop or pointing to a loop.

    • If MAC address flapping occurs, solve this problem.
    • If MAC address flapping does not occur or the fault persists after MAC address flapping is eliminated, go to Step 6.
  6. Check whether routing information is correct.
    1. Run the display ip routing-table statistics and display ip routing-table all-vpn-instance statistics commands to check the Summary Prefixes fields. Check whether the sum of Summary Prefixes fields exceeds the specifications.

      • If the specifications are not exceeded, go to step b.
    2. Run the display ip routing-table [ vpn-instance vpn-instance-name ] ip-address [ mask | mask-length ] command to check whether the next hop address and outbound interface in the routing table are correct. Run the display fei ipv4 route-entry slot slot-id dst-ip ip-address command in the diagnostic view to check whether the route prefix is correct. If the route prefix is not correct, check whether the configuration is correct.

      • If the route configuration is incorrect, correct the configuration.
      • If the route configuration is correct, go to step c.
    3. If a route is imported through OSPF, check whether there are problems such as a failure to establish a neighbor relationship and routing flapping according to OSPF Interoperability Troubleshooting Guide.
      • If the route that is imported through OSPF is unreachable, check whether the route configuration is correct.
      • If the route that is imported through OSPF is reachable, go to step 7.
  7. Check whether ARP entries are correct.

    Run the display arp | include ip-address command to check whether ARP entries are learned.

    • If ARP entries are not learned, perform the following operations:
      1. Run the display arp statistics command to check whether the number of ARP entries exceeds the maximum value.

        If the number of ARP entries exceeds the maximum value, use a high-specification card (use the ARP mode on the CE12800 and CE12800E).

      2. Run the display cpu-defend statistics packet-type arp slot slot-id command to check whether many ARP packets are discarded and determine whether an ARP attack occurs.

        If an ARP attack occurs, use attack source tracing and take punishment measures.

    • If ARP entries are learned, run the display fei ipv4 arp slot slot-id command in the diagnostic view to check whether delivered ARP entries are correct. Run the display fei l3 statistics slot slot-id command to check failed statistics.

      If the ARP configuration is incorrect, correct the ARP configuration.

    Check whether ARP entry errors occur due to the preceding causes. If the fault persists, go to step 8.

  8. Check whether the parity check error occurs.

    Run the save logfile diagnose-log command in the diagnostic view to collect diagnostic information (diagnostic information is stored in the diag.log file at flash:/logfile). Check whether there is the parity error field. If there is the parity error field, go to step 9.

  9. Collect the following information and contact technical support personnel:
    • Results of the preceding troubleshooting procedure
    • Configuration file, logs, and alarms of the device
