An Interface Does Not Go Up

Common Causes

This fault is commonly caused by the following:
  • The interface is in Error-Down state.

  • The transmission medium is problematic.

  • The configuration is incorrect.

Troubleshooting Procedure

If an interface does not go Up, perform the following steps to locate the fault (save operation records):

Step 1 Check whether the interface is in Error-Down state.

Check the following items based on the preceding command output:
  • View the Transceiver Type field to check whether the local optical module type matches the remote optical module type. For example, if a GE optical module is installed on the remote interface and a 10GE optical module is installed on the local interface, the interfaces do not go Up. You can replace the optical module on the local or remote interface based on actual requirements so that the local and remote optical modules have the same rate.

  • View the Transfer Distance field to check the transmission distance of the optical module, and determine whether the optical fiber length is within the allowed transmission distance range of the optical module based on the optical fiber type. In the preceding command output, the transmission distance supported by OM1 optical fibers is 30 m. If the actual transmission distance exceeds 30 m, use an optical fiber with a longer transmission distance.

  • View the Current TX Power and Current RX Power fields under Diagnostic information to check whether the transmit and receive optical power of the optical module are normal.

    For example, if the value of the Current RX Power field is between values of the Default RX Power High Threshold (dBm) and Default RX Power Low Threshold (dBm) fields, the receive optical power is normal. Otherwise, the receive optical power is abnormal. Check whether the remote optical module is normal or connects to an optical fiber correctly. Similarly, if the value of Current TX Power exceeds the allowed range, the transmit optical power is abnormal. Check whether the local optical module is normal or connects to an optical fiber correctly.

  • Check the Alarm information field to determine whether the optical module is certified for Huawei Ethernet switches. If the alarm message "Non-Huawei-Certified Transceiver" or "Non-Huawei-Ethernet-Switch-Certified Transceiver" is displayed, the optical module is not certified for Huawei Ethernet switches. Replace it with one that is certified for Huawei Ethernet switches.

If values of the preceding fields are normal, go to step 3.

Step 3 Check whether the configurations of the local and remote interfaces are different.

  • View the display this command output to check whether the configuration of the local interface is the same as that of the remote interface, for example, check whether the interface is shut down (using the shutdown command) or configured with the training function (using the training command).

  • View the Negotiation, Speed, and Duplex fields in the display this interface command output to check whether the auto-negotiation mode, rate, and duplex mode of the local and remote interfaces match.

If the configurations are different, modify the configurations so that the local and remote interfaces have the same auto-negotiation mode, rate, and duplex mode. If the configurations are the same, go to step 4.

Step 4 Collect the following information and contact technical support personnel:
  • Results of the preceding troubleshooting procedure

  • Configuration file, logs, and alarms of the device
