MEth Management Interface Cannot Be Pinged Because of Rate Limiting on the Interface

Abstract

If the rate at which the MEth management interface forwards packets exceeds the configured rate limit, the MEth management interface cannot be pinged.

Problem Description

In Figure 16-12, the network port of the PC is connected to the MEth management port of the CE5855EI that is on the same Layer 2 network. On the PC, the IP address of the MEth management interface on the CE5855EI fails to be pinged. On the CE5855EI, the IP address of the network port on the PC fails to be pinged.

Procedure

  1. On the CE5855EI, check the statistics of the MEth management interface. It is found that the Over-car-pps field has a value. This indicates that packet loss occurs on the MEth management interface due to rate limiting.

    To configure the rate limit for the MEth management interface, run the qos lr pps command. The default rate limit is as follows:
    • For the CE5850EI, CE5880EI, CE6800, CE7800, CE8800, CE12800, CE12800E series switches, the default rate limit is 3000 pps on the MEth management interface.
    • For the CE5810EI, CE5850HI, and CE5855EI, the default rate limit rate is 800 pps on the MEth management interface.

  2. Capture packets forwarded on the MEth management interface. It is found that a large number of Syslog packets are forwarded through the MEth management interface. The packet forwarding rate is 1127 pps, which exceeds the default rate limit 800 pps on the MEth management interface of the CE5855EI.

  3. Disable Syslog packets from being forwarded through the MEth management interface. The PC and CE5855EI can ping each other.

The PC and CE5855EI fail to ping each other because the packet forwarding rate on the MEth management interface exceeds the rate limit and ping packets are discarded.

Root Cause

The packet forwarding rate on the MEth management interface exceeds the rate limit.

Solution

Change the path for forwarding Syslog packets so that Syslog packets are not forwarded through the MEth management interface.

Suggestion

You are advised to disable the MEth management interface from forwarding data packets.
