Replacing a PSU

This topic describes how to replace a power supply unit (PSU).

Scenario

  • A PSU is faulty.
  • A PSU needs to be repaired.

Impact on the System

Removing a PSU will allocate the loads to other PSUs and increase the average load.

Prerequisites

  1. Matters for Attention
    • The recommended current specifications for the external power circuit breaker connected to the server are as follows: ≥ 32 A AC.
    • All cables are removed from the PSU.
    • You can replace only one PSU at a time.
  2. Spare parts

    Obtain the spare PSU and packing materials, for example, an ESD bag. Place them less than 0.5 m (1.64 ft) away from the cabinet.

  3. Data

    Cabinet number, chassis number, and slot number of the PSU that is to be replaced.

    Locate the PSU based on the preceding information, and label the PSU panel for identification.

  4. Tools
    • Phillips screwdriver
    • ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Push the spring fastening the ejector lever, and release the spring. See step (1) in Figure 5-1.
  3. Press and hold down the ejected spring, hold the handle, and pull the PSU out gently. See step (2) in Figure 5-1.

  4. Place the removed PSU into an ESD bag.
  5. Take a spare PSU out of an ESD bag.
  6. Hold a PSU with both hands, and insert the PSU horizontally into the slot, as shown in Figure 5-2.

  7. Connect a power cable and start the PSU.

Follow-up Procedure

If the fans are operating properly, the PSU is started. If the operating status indicator is steady green, the PSU is operating properly.
