Replacing a Fan Module

Replacing a Fan Module

This section describes how to replace a fan module.

  • A fan module is faulty.
  • A fan module needs to be repaired.

Impact on the System

Removing a fan module will make other fan modules run at full speed.

  1. Matters for Attention
    • A new fan module needs to be installed properly within 2 minutes after an old one is removed, to prevent the heat dissipation performance and service processing capability of the system from being affected.
    • You can replace only one fan module at a time.
  2. Spare parts

Obtain the spare fan module and packing materials, for example, an electrostatic discharge (ESD) bag. Place them less than 0.5 m (1.64 ft) away from the cabinet.

  3. Data

Cabinet number and shelf number of the fan module that is to be replaced.

Locate the fan module to be replaced in the cabinet based on the preceding information, and label its panel for identification.

  4. Tools

ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Push the spring fastening the ejector lever, and release the spring. See step (1) in Figure 5-3.
  3. Hold the ejector lever on the fan module and gently pull it out of the slot. See step (2) in Figure 5-3.

  4. Place the fan module into an ESD bag.
  5. Take a spare fan module out of an ESD bag.
  6. Hold a fan module with both hands, and insert the PSU horizontally into the slot until the fan module snaps into the chassis, as shown in Figure 5-4.

Follow-up Procedure

Power on the chassis. The fan module is operating properly if its status indicator is steady green.
