Glossary

B

BMC

Baseboard management controller. The BMC complies with the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) standard, and is responsible for collecting, processing, and storing sensor signals, and monitoring the operating status of each component. The BMC reports the hardware status and alarm information about managed objects to the MM610, so that the MM610 can manage the objects.

C

controller card

A card connected to the mainboard through a connector, which is level to the mainboard. It is used on devices with high requirement for space usage.

E

ejector lever

An item or part on the panel, used to insert or remove a server node.

Ethernet

A baseband local area network (LAN) architecture developed by Xerox Corporation in cooperation with DEC and Intel. Ethernet uses the carrier sense multiple types of access/collision detection (CSMA/CD) access methods and supports data transfer rates of 10 Mbit/s on multiple cables. The Ethernet specification is the basis for the IEEE 802.3 standard. It is one of the most widely implemented LAN standards.

G

Gigabit Ethernet

An extended and enhanced Ethernet standard against traditional sharing media, which is compatible with 10M and 100M Ethernet and complies with the IEEE 802.3z standard.

H

hot swap

A feature that insertion or removal of a blade or component in a running system does not affect normal running of the system.

K

KVM

Keyboard, video, and mouse. A switch that provides public video, keyboard, and mouse for all server nodes.

P

panel

The element at the very front of a server node, perpendicular to the PCB, which serves to mount connectors, indicators, controls, and mezzanines, and also seals the front of the subrack for airflow and EMC.

R

RAID

Redundant array of independent disks. RAID is a storage technology that combines multiple independent physical disks into a logical disk (disk group) in several ways, which are called RAID levels, to provide higher storage and redundancy performance than a single physical disk.

redundancy

The ability of a system to keep functioning normally in the event of a device failure by having a backup device automatically replace the faulty one.

S

SEL

System event log. A non-volatile storage area and associated ports for storing system platform events for later retrieval.

server

A special computer providing services for clients in the network environment.

U

U

A unit defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60297-1 to measure the height of a rack, chassis, or subrack. 1U = 44.45 mm = 1.75 in.

W

warm swap

Insertion or removal of a FRU when the server node is in the S5 state (PSUs not turned off) and the CPUs are not operating.
