Configuring iBMC Syslog Reporting

Configuring iBMC Syslog Reporting

Operation Scenario

On the Alarm Setting page of the iBMC WebUI, you can configure iBMC to send logs as syslog packets to a third-party server.

Preparations

Prerequisites

A local client can communicate with the server iBMC.

Data

Before configuration, plan all data required by the configuration.

  • Syslog attributes:
    • Information used to identify the source host. For example, board serial number, product asset tag, or host name.
    • Transmission protocol, such as TLS, TCP, or UDP.
    • Syslog authentication method, such as one-way authentication and mutual authentication.
    • Log levels.
  • Syslog server information and log types:
    • Status of the reporting channel.
    • Server address.
    • Server port number.
    • Types of logs to be reported

Software

You have downloaded the free certificate generation tool OpenSSL from the Internet.

Procedure

  1. Use OpenSSL to generate certificates.

Manually generate certificates by using a certificate generation tool.

    • For one-way authentication, upload the server certificate to the syslog server.
    • For mutual authentication, upload the server certificate and client root certificate to the syslog server.

  2. Upload certificates to the syslog server.

Use a file transfer tool that supports SFTP, for example WinSCP, to transfer the certificates to the specified directory (for example /tmp) of the iBMC file system.

    • For one-way authentication, upload the server certificate to the syslog server.
    • For mutual authentication, upload the server certificate and client root certificate to the syslog server.

  3. Log in to the iBMC WebUI.

For details, see Logging In to the iBMC WebUI.

  4. Configure syslog attributes.
    1. On the iBMC WebUI, choose Alarm & SEL > Alarm Setting.
    2. In the Alarm Syslog Notification Settings area, click to enable syslog reporting.

If is changed to , syslog reporting is enabled.

    3. Set Syslog Server Identity, Alarm Severities, Transmission Protocol, and Authentication Mode.
    4. Upload certificates.

      • If Authentication Mode is One way authentication, upload the server root certificate generated in Generate certificates to iBMC.
      • If Authentication Mode is Mutual authentication, upload the server root certificate and client certificate generated in Generate certificates to iBMC.

  5. Configure the syslog server and packet format.
    1. Select the channel for sending syslog packets.
    2. Click to display the channel edit area.
    3. Click to enable the channel.

If is changed to , the channel is enabled.

    4. Set Server Address, Syslog Port, and Log Type.
    5. Click Test.

If the operation success message is displayed, the channel is available.
