Application Scenarios

The remote replication feature is used for data backup and DR. Its typical application scenarios include the data distribution site and central backup and DR site.

The file system remote replication only supports asynchronous remote replication.

Table 1-6 describes typical application scenarios of the file system remote replication.

  • Data distribution management: Enables each branch to save one copy of the primary site's data.
  • When the primary site encounters a disaster, any one of the branches can take over services and recover data.
  • Backup data is managed centrally so that data analysis and data mining can be performed without affecting services.
  • When any of the service sites encounters a disaster, the central backup and DR site can quickly take over services and recover data, achieving unified service data management.

The data distribution site and central backup and DR site are two different application scenarios. At the data distribution site, the file system remote replication allocates the primary site's data to branches in different places. On the contrary, at the central backup and DR site, the file system remote replication centrally backs up all branches' data.

Data Distribution Site

At the data distribution site, the file system remote replication allocates the primary site's data to branches in different places. Each branch reserves one copy of the primary site's data. When the primary site encounters a disaster, any one of the branches can take over services and recover data. Figure 1-5 shows a data distribution site.

At the data distribution site, the file system remote replication can:
  • Allocate the primary site's data to branches to ensure data consistency between the primary site and each branch.
  • Enable any one of the branches to take over services (failover mode) when the primary site encounters a disaster and switch back services to the primary site after the primary site recovers (failback mode).

Central Backup and DR Site

At a central backup and DR site, service data distributed to different places is backed up to the same site for centralized management. Service data at multiple service sites is centrally backed up to and managed at the central backup and DR site. When a disaster occurs at any service site, the central backup and DR site can take over services from the service site and recover data. Figure 1-6 shows a central backup and DR site.

At the central backup and DR site, the file system remote replication can:
  • Collect data from n (a number) service sites to the central backup and DR site, take a snapshot of the secondary file system, and map the secondary file system to a host. The snapshot can be used for data analysis and data mining.
  • Allow the central backup and DR site to take over services when any service site (01 to n) has a disaster and switch back services when the site recovers.
