This document describes hardware installation procedures of the S9300, S9300E, and S9300X series switches, troubleshooting methods for common hardware faults, and switch maintenance instructions.

Replacing an MPU with a New One of a Different Model


MPUs of different models cannot be used in the same chassis. To replace an MPU with a new one of a different model, power of the switch, remove the old MPU, and then install the new one.

  • Powering off the switch will cause service interruption.
  • Do not touch the electronic components on an MPU. Install or remove an MPU slowly and horizontally.

  • You must format the CF card on an MPU that needs to be scraped or returned for repair or the faulty CF card that has been replaced by a new one.

  • Before replacing an MPU, verify that the available power is sufficient for new MPU using the display power system command. If the available power (The remain power in the command output) is smaller than the power of the new MPU, use power modules with higher power to replace the original ones. Otherwise, the new MPU will fail to be powered on. It is recommended that you use the Power Consumption Calculator to calculate the total power consumption of the switch.
  • If you want to use the original configuration file after replacing the old MPU with a different MPU model, make sure that the old and new MPUs run the same software version. Save the configuration on the old MPU, and copy the configuration file to the new MPU after the replacement. If the two MPUs run different versions, upgrade the one running an earlier version or upgrade both MPUs to a later version. Due to difference of the MPU models, some configurations may need to be changed after the replacement.
If the old MPU runs V200R002 or an earlier version, you need to re-configure the time zone and daylight saving time after the replacement:
  1. Before the replacement, run the display clock command to check the current time zone and daylight saving time settings.
  2. After replacing the MPU, log in to the switch, and run the clock datetime, clock timezone, and clock daylight-saving-time commands to set the system time, time zone, and daylight saving time.

Tools and Accessories

  • ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves

  • Phillips screwdriver


  1. (Optional) Make sure that the old and new MPUs run the same software version, and copy the configuration file and license file of the old MPU to your computer.
  2. Power off the switch by turning the power switches of all power modules to OFF position and turning off the circuit breakers connected to them in the power distribution cabinet.
  3. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves. When wearing an ESD wrist strap, insert the other end of the strap into an ESD jack and ensure that the equipment where the ESD jack is located has been reliably grounded.
  4. Record the cable locations on the old MPU and check whether the labels on the cables are correct and clear. If any label is unclear, make and attach a new label to cable to ensure correct connection.
  5. Remove cables from the old MPU.

    • To remove a cable, release the handle or locking clips on the cable connector, gently push the cable connector by holding the handle or locking clips, and then unplug the cable.

    • If many cables are connected to a card, use the tweezers delivered with the switch to remove the cables.

  6. Pull the old MPU out of the slot. For details, see Replacing a Service Card.
  7. Take out the new MPU from the package, and inspect the MPU to make sure that no components are damaged or missing.
  8. Install the new MPU into the slot for the standby MPU. For the installation method, see Installing a Card.
  9. Turn on the circuit breakers connected to the power modules, and then turn power switches of the all power modules to the ON position to power on the switch.
  10. View the RUN/ALM indicator on the new MPU.

    After the new MPU is installed in the chassis, it starts and registers automatically. The start and registration process takes less than 5 minutes.

    • If the RUN/ALM indicator blinks green fast, the card is starting.
    • If the RUN/ALM indicator blinks green slowly, the card is running normally.

  11. Connect cables to the correct ports on the new MPU according to labels on the cables.
  12. (Optional) Upload the configuration file and license to the new MPU and load them.

Follow-up Procedure

  1. The CF card on an MPU saves important data, such as configuration data and system logs. To ensure data security, format the following CF cards:
    • CF card on a scrapped MPU
    • CF card on an MPU to be sent back for repair
    • Old CF card replaced by a new one
  2. Verify the functions of the new MPU.

    • Run the display device command to view the running status of the new MPU.
    • Run the display license command to check license information on the new MPU. It should be the same as the license information on the old MPU.
    The network monitoring engineers or system maintenance engineers can configure software features on the switch using the command line interface.

After replacing the MPU, collect all tools. If the replaced MPU is faulty, fill in the Repair Transmission Sheet and send the faulty module with the Repair Transmission Sheet to the equipment supplier or the specified repair service provider.
