Replacing a Memory Module

This section explains how to replace a memory module for a P12.

Impact on the System

You must power off the P12 before replacing a memory module. This interrupts the services running on the P12. Exercise caution when performing this operation.

Prerequisites

  • The replacement memory module is ready.
  • The faulty memory module has been located.
  • The memory module is located at the rear of the main control board enclosure. You need to remove the cover and air director from the main control board enclosure before replacing the memory module.

Precaution

  • Only qualified technical support engineers are allowed to replace a memory module.
  • Ensure that both power supplies of the P12 have been shut down.
  • The memory module has one installation direction only. Use even force when you insert a memory module into the slot. Excessive force may damage the memory module or slot.
  • The type and capacity of new memory must be the same as the faulty memory.
  • Before replacing a memory module, record the system memory capacity for check and comparison after the replacement.
  • Follow different specific regulations when you insert different number of memory modules. The red box in Figure 2-22 shows the memory slot on the mainboard. Table 2-1 shows memory configuration and installation list.

Procedure

  1. Wear the ESD wrist strap and ESD gloves. For details, see Put on an ESD wrist strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  2. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

    Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

  3. Label the cable connections between the P12 and power sockets and peripheral devices. Then disconnect the cables.
  4. Pull out the main control board enclosure. For details, see 4 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  5. Remove the cover of the main control board enclosure. For details, see 5 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  6. Take out the air director upward.
  7. Open memory ejectors to enable the memory module to disconnect from the slot, as shown in step 1 in Figure 2-23.
  8. Take out the memory module upward from the chassis, as shown in step 2 in Figure 2-23.

  9. Put the removed memory module into an ESD bag.
  10. Take the replacement memory module out of its ESD bag.
  11. Align the notch on the memory module with that on the slot and then insert the memory module into the slot, as shown in step 1 in Figure 2-24.
  12. Close the memory ejectors, as shown in step 2 in Figure 2-24. Then the ejectors automatically lock the memory module.

  13. Align the notches in the enclosure and install the air director.
  14. Install the cover of the main control board enclosure. For details, see 10 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  15. Install the main control board enclosure. For details, see 11 in Replacing a Fan Module.

    After hardware installation, if there are operations need to be performed using BIOS, for the initial startup, clear NVDIMM data using the BIOS. Otherwise, the operating system may fail to be started. Before connecting the power cable and powering on the storage node, connect the KVM cable, and then adjust the display content of the KVM to the port connected to the storage node.

  16. Correctly connect the P12 to the power sockets and peripheral devices according to the cable connection labels. Then power on the P12.
  17. Clear NVDIMM data.
    1. During the system startup process, press Esc when the Press Esc for boot options message is displayed, choose SCU, input the BIOS password to enter the BIOS screen.

    2. Choose Security > Clear NvDimm Flash.

    3. In the Clear NvDimm Flash? dialog box, select Yes and press Enter.

    4. Wait 20 seconds. Check whether the displayed dialog box states "Clear NvDimm flash success. Please reboot system!"

      • If yes, go to 17.e.
      • If no, contact technical support.

    5. Press Enter and then F10. In the dialog box that is displayed, select Yes to save the configuration and restart the storage node.

  18. Restart the system. During the startup, enter the BIOS interface to check the system memory capacity.

    During the system startup, when the information as shown in Figure 2-31 is displayed, press Esc, choose SCU when the window display as shown in Figure 2-32, input the BIOS password to enter the BIOS screen, then check the system memory capacity, as shown in Figure 2-33.

    • If the system memory capacity equals the actual memory capacity, the installation is successful. Then restart the device.
    • If the system memory capacity is smaller than the actual memory capacity or the system cannot start correctly, the memory module may be incorrectly installed. In this case, reinstall the memory module.

Follow-up Procedure

After the memory module is replaced, label the replaced memory module to facilitate subsequent operations.
