Replacing a Network Adapter

This section explains how to replace a network adapter of the P25.

Impact on the System

‏The P25 must be powered off before replacement of a network adapter. Therefore, the services running on the P25 are affected. Perform this operation with caution.

Prerequisites

  • A new network adapter is available.
  • Because the network adapter is in the plug-in frame of the main control board, you need to take the plug-in frame out of the main control board, open the cover, and replace the network adapter.

Precaution

  • The P25 can be configured with Intel® Ethernet I340 Server Adapter 4-port GE network adapters, Ethernet Server Adapter X520-SR2 2-port 10 GE network adapters, or Mellanox® MHQH29C-XTR 2-port InfiniBand (IB) network adapters or 2-port TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) 10GE network adapters. The P25 can be also configured with QLE-2562 FC HBAs. An HBA of the P25 can be replaced in the same way as a network adapter is replaced.
  • Only professional maintenance engineers are allowed to replace the network adapter.
  • Each P25 has two power supplies. Ensure that both supplies are disconnected.

Tools and Materials

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Tag

Procedure

  1. Wear the ESD wrist strap or gloves. For details, see Wearing an ESD Wrist Strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  2. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

    Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

  3. Record the cable matching between the P25 and power sockets as well as external devices. Then, disconnect the P25 from power sockets and external devices.
  4. Open the rear cover of the chassis. For details, see 4 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  5. Remove the main control board enclosure top cover. For details, see 5 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  6. Loosen the six screws on the chassis and the mainboard counterclockwise, as shown in step (1) in Figure 3-58.

  7. Remove the network adapter upward, as shown in step 2 in Figure 3-58.
  8. Put the removed network adapter into the ESD bag. The operation of removing the network adapter is complete.
  9. Take the network adapter to be installed out of the ESD bag.
  10. Insert the network adapter into the PCIE slot downward vertically, as shown in step 1 in Figure 3-59.

  11. Fasten the screws clockwise to fix the network adapter on the PCIE bracket, as shown in step 2 in Figure 3-59.
  12. Install the main control board enclosure top cover. For details, see 10 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  13. Install the main control board enclosure. For details, see 11 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  14. Connect the P25 with the power sockets and peripheral devices, and then power on the P25.
  15. Check whether the network adapter is installed successfully by observing the status of the ACT indicators on the network adapter.

    • If the ACT indicator is green on or blinking green, it indicates that the installation is successful.
    • If the ACT indicator is off, it indicates that the network adapter may be improperly installed. In that case, reinstall the network adapter.

  16. Optional: Check and upgrade the firmware of an IB network adapter.

    After replacing an IB network adapter, perform the following operations:

    1. On the node where the IB network adapter to be replaced resides, run the ibstat command to check whether the value of Firmware version is 2.33.5310.

      • If yes, there is no need to upgrade firmware.
      • If no, go to 16.b.

    2. Upgrade the firmware.

      1. Log in to http://support.huawei.com/enterprise/en/doc/DOC1000150997 and download the OceanStor 9000 Node Firmware Upgrade Guide.zip package. Decompress the package to obtain the OceanStor 9000 IB Card Firmware Upgrade Guide.
      2. Log in to http://support.huawei.com/enterprise/en/software/22318311-SW1000242794 and download the OceanStor_9000_V300R006C00SPC200_FW_T3000.zip package. Decompress the package to obtain the IB network adapter firmware upgrade file.

        On the output of the ibstat command:

        • If the value of Part Number ends with QCBT, obtain the fw-ConnectX3-rel-2_30_8310-MCX354A-QCB_Ax-FlexBoot-3.4.151.bin file in the ib_fw\40g directory.
        • If the value of Part Number ends with FCBT, obtain the fw-ConnectX3-rel-2_33_5310-MCX354A-FCB_A2-A5-FlexBoot-3.4.460.bin file in the ib_fw\56g directory.

  17. Run the script to check the status of the storage node.

    cd /opt/huawei/deploy/script

    ./envcheck.py

  18. Check whether the network ports of the storage node are named A0-0, A0-1, B3-0, and B3-1.
    1. Run ifconfig -a on the KVM to check whether the network ports of the storage node are named A0-0, A0-1, B3-0, and B3-1.

      • If yes, the replacement is completed.
      • If no, go to 18.b.

    2. Run reboot to restart the storage node to identify the new network adapter.
  19. On the DeviceManager, view the node status.
    1. On the maintenance terminal, log in to the DeviceManager in a browser.
    2. In the Alarms area on the home page, check whether new alarms are generated.

      • If yes, handle the alarms by following the alarm help information.
      • If no, go to 19.c.

    3. On the right of the home page, click System to go to the System page.
    4. Click Device View tab to go to the Device View page.
    5. In Nodes, view the status of the new storage node.

      • Health Status: Normal
      • Running Status: Online

Follow-up Procedure

After the network adapter is replaced, label on the replaced network adapter for the convenience of subsequent handling.
