Replacing a CBU

This section explains how to replace a Capacitor Backup Unit (CBU) of the C72.

Impact on the System

During the replacement of a CBU, system reliability is reduced.


  • A replacement CBU is ready.
  • The CBU that you want to replace has been located.


  • Use care when you remove and insert a CBU to avoid any damage to the appearance or connectors of the CBU.
  • Remove only one CBU at a time.
  • You are advised to replace a CBU within the shortest time possible.

Tools and Materials

  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Labels


  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  2. Press the latch on the CBU and remove the CBU, as shown in Figure 5-14.

  3. Place the removed CBU into an ESD bag.
  4. Take the replacement CBU out of its ESD bag.
  5. Insert the replacement CBU into the empty slot until it clicks into place, as shown in Figure 5-15.

  6. Wait about two minutes and check the status of the activity indicator on the CBU to determine whether the CBU is successfully installed. Figure 5-16 shows the location of the activity indicator.

    • If the indicator is steady green, the CBU is successfully installed.
    • If the indicator is off, the newly installed CBU is faulty, the slot that houses the CBU is faulty, or the CBU is incorrectly installed.

  7. Check the status of the storage node on the DeviceManager.
    1. Start the browser on the maintenance terminal and log in to the DeviceManager.
    2. In the Alarms area on the home page, check whether a new alarm is reported.

      • If yes, handle the alarm according to the alarm help.
      • If no, go to 7.c.

    3. Click Device View to go to the device view.
    4. In Nodes, check the status of the node that is newly added to the cluster.

      • Health Status: Normal
      • Running Status: Online

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the CBU, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
