Why Is There a Recommended Specification on the Maximum Number of OSPF Routes, Without a Limit over Which Packets Are Discarded?

OSPF needs to update the link state database (LSDB) through packet flooding. If packets are forcibly discarded, the route calculation result may be incorrect, causing serious problems, such as routing loops. The recommended specification is a security specification tested in the hardware, such as CPU and memory. If the number of routes exceeds the upper limit, the CPU usage remains high and the memory is exhausted. In this case, even if the number of routes is reduced through manual intervening, it takes a long time to restore the CPU and memory of the device.
