How Can I Configure L2TP?

How Can I Configure L2TP?

Based on Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) negotiation, Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) sets up tunnels between branch users and enterprise headquarters over the dial-up network, so that remote users can access the headquarters network. Figure 29-34 shows the typical networking of L2TP.

Typically, L2TP is configured on Huawei AR series routers in the following scenarios:
  • Enterprise employees on business trips often change their physical locations and need to communicate with the headquarters and access intranet resources of the headquarters at any time. The L2TP network server (LNS) is deployed as the headquarters network gateway, enabling employees on business trips to use the L2TP dial-up software for establishing virtual point-to-point (P2P) connections between their PCs and the headquarters network gateway. For details, see Example for Configuring Client-Initiated L2TP Connections in the Huawei AR100&AR120&AR150&AR160&AR200&AR1200&AR2200&AR3200&AR3600 Series Enterprise Routers CLI-based Configuration - VPN Configuration Guide.
  • Users in a branch need to establish virtual private dial-up network (VPDN) connections with the headquarters. The users in the branch apply for L2TP services from the Internet service provider (ISP) and the ISP configures the network access server (NAS) as an L2TP access concentrator (LAC) to forward dial-up connection requests of the users to the LNS through the public network. The LNS is deployed as the headquarters network gateway to provide access services for users, implementing L2TP connections between the branch users and the headquarters network gateway. For details, see Example for Configuring the LAC to Initiate Call-Triggered L2TP Connections (Dial-Up Users) in the Huawei AR100&AR120&AR150&AR160&AR200&AR1200&AR2200&AR3200&AR3600 Series Enterprise Routers CLI-based Configuration - VPN Configuration Guide.
  • Users in a branch need to establish VPDN connections with the headquarters. L2TP is deployed between the branch and the headquarters. The branch has no dial-up network, and a Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) server functions as its gateway to transmit PPP dial-up data over the Ethernet. In addition, the LAC functions as the branch gateway to establish L2TP tunnels with the headquarters. For details, see Example for Configuring the LAC to Initiate Call-Triggered L2TP Connections (PPPoE Users) in the Huawei AR100&AR120&AR150&AR160&AR200&AR1200&AR2200&AR3200&AR3600 Series Enterprise Routers CLI-based Configuration - VPN Configuration Guide.
  • Users in a branch or on business trips require that services transmitted over L2TP tunnels be protected to prevent eavesdropping and tampering. For details, see Example for Configuring L2TP Over IPSec to Implement Secure Communication Between the Headquarters and Branch in the Huawei AR100&AR120&AR150&AR160&AR200&AR1200&AR2200&AR3200&AR3600 Series Enterprise Routers CLI-based Configuration - VPN Configuration Guide.
