A Router Fails to Start and the Console Port Prints Error Messages

A Router Fails to Start and the Console Port Prints Error Messages

Fault Description

A router fails to start and the console port prints error messages.

Possible Causes

The possible cause of a start failure is that the router is not powered off or the power supply is abnormal.

Possible causes of error messages on console port:
  • Parameter settings on the console port are incorrect.

  • The console cable is faulty.

  • The path of startup files is incorrectly specified.

  • The storage device (SD card or USB flash drive) saving the startup files has been removed from the router or is not securely connected to the router.

  • The memory module is loose.

Troubleshooting Procedure

  1. Check the PWR indicator on the panel. If the PWR indicator is steady green, the power supply of the router is normal. If the PWR indicator is off, the router is not powered on. See An AR Router Fails to Be Powered On to solve the problem.

  2. Check whether the console cable is correctly connected to the CON port of the router and whether the console port parameter settings are as follows:
    • Baud rate: 9600
    • Data bits: 8
    • Stop bit: 1
    • Parity check: disabled
    • Flow control: disabled
  3. Replace the console cable with another one that can work normally. If the router starts successfully, the original console cable is faulty.
  4. If the path of startup files is incorrect, perform the following steps to specify the correct path.
    1. Restart the router. When the system displays "Press Ctrl+B to break auto startup", press Ctrl+B immediately.

  5. The startup files can be saved in the flash memory, SD card, or USB flash drive. If the startup files are saved in an SD card or USB flash drive which has been removed from the router, the router cannot start. Install the SD card or USB flash drive and start the router again. The router cannot restart either if the SD card or USB flash drive is not securely connected. In this case, reinstall the SD card or USB flash drive.
  6. If the router is an AR2240,AR3260 or AR3670 or AR2240-S or AR3260-S, remove the Service Routing Unit (SRU) from the chassis, reinstall the memory module on the SRU, and lock the memory module. Install the SRU on the chassis and start the router.
