Why Is an Extra Interface Displayed in the Command Output When I View Interfaces on the Router?

Answer

When you run a display command to check interfaces on a router, the displayed interface that is not on the router panel is a reserved virtual interface. The interface does not affect configurations of other interfaces. It is used only when you configure some special services (for example, virtualization).

During virtualization configuration, the virtual interface can be used to connect virtual switches provided by the virtual environment. The virtual interface is named GigabitEthernet0/0/x.

  • In V200R008C30 and earlier versions, the interface with the largest interface number in the display interface brief command output is the virtual interface and the interface description is VirtualPort.
