More Information

Policy-based routing (PBR) allows network administrators to make user-defined policies to change packet forwarding paths based on source addresses, packet size, and link quality in addition to destination addresses of packets. PBR is classified into local PBR, interface PBR, and SPR.

PBR application scenario
  • Local PBR: changes the forwarding path of packets originated by a router. In Figure 29-26, packets of different sizes delivered by RouterA need to be forwarded over different links. To meet this requirement, configure local PBR.

  • Interface PBR: changes the forwarding path of packets forwarded by a router. In Figure 29-27, packets with different network segment addresses in an enterprise need to be forwarded to the Internet over different links. To meet this requirement, configure interface PBR.

  • SPR: implements smart route selection according to link quality requirements of network services. In Figure 29-28, voice and video services between enterprise branches and data center need to be transmitted over ISP1 link with higher link quality, while FTP and HTTP services need to be transmitted over ISP2 link with lower link quality. To meet this requirement, configure SPR.
