DHCP Troubleshooting

DHCP Troubleshooting

Common Causes

DHCP faults are commonly caused by one of the following:

  • No gateway IP address or DNS server address is configured on the DHCP server.
  • The IP address lease configured on the DHCP server is too long and the IP address pool does not contain sufficient IP addresses.
  • STP is enabled on the DHCP client.

Troubleshooting Procedure

NOTE:

Saving the results of each troubleshooting step is recommended. If your troubleshooting fails to correct the fault, you will have a record of your actions to provide technical support personnel.

Procedure

  1. Check whether an IP address pool is correctly configured on the DHCP server.

    NOTE:

If DHCP is not enabled, the device does not process DHCP messages sent from clients.

    • If an interface address pool is used, run the display this command in the interface view to check the configuration of the interface address pool.
      • If dhcp server dns-list is not displayed, no DNS server address is configured in the interface address pool. Run the dhcp server dns-list ip-address &<1-8> command to configure a DNS server address in the address pool.
      • If dhcp server static-bind is not displayed, no IP address in the interface address pool is bound to the MAC address of the DHCP client. Run the dhcp server static-bind ip-address ip-address mac-address mac-address command to bind an IP address to the MAC address of the DHCP client.
      • If the lease of IP addresses in the interface address pool is too long, run the dhcp server lease { day day [ hour hour [ minute minute ] ] | unlimited } command to shorten the lease.
    • If a global IP address pool is used, run the ip pool ip-pool-name command in the system view to enter the global address pool view. Then run the display this command to check the configuration of the global address pool.
      • If dns-list is not displayed, no DNS server address is configured in the global address pool. Run the dns-list ip-address &<1-8> command to configure a DNS server address in the global address pool.
      • If static-bind is not displayed, no IP address in the interface address pool is bound to the MAC address of the DHCP client. Run the static-bind ip-address ip-address mac-address mac-address command to bind an IP address to the MAC address of the DHCP client.
      • If the lease of IP addresses in the global address pool is too long, run the lease { day day [ hour hour [ minute minute ] ] | unlimited } command to shorten the lease.

  2. Check whether STP is disabled on the DHCP client.

Run the display stp command in the system view on the client to check the STP status.

If the Protocol Status field displays enabled, run the stp disable command to disable STP.

  3. If the fault persists, collect the following information and contact technical support personnel.

    • Results of the preceding troubleshooting procedure
    • Configuration file, logs, and alarms of the device
