What can I do if fan modules make loud noises?

What can I do if fan modules make loud noises?

Fault Description

Fans on a router run at full speed and create loud noises. The STATUS indicator on the fan module is fast blinking red.

Possible Causes

  • The fan module is not installed properly in the fan slot.

  • One or more fans stop running because the blades are blocked.

  • The fan module is not running the latest software version.

  • The fan module is faulty.

Troubleshooting Procedure

  1. Reinstall the fan module to make sure that it is securely connected to the backplane, and then fasten the captive screws on the fan module panel.

  2. If there are obstacles blocking fan blades, remove the fan module, clear the fans, and install the fan module in the chassis.
    NOTE:

A fan module usually has more than one fan. If any fan fails to run, all the other fans run at the full speed, causing loud noises.

  3. Check whether the fan module is running the latest software version. Collecting information and contact technical support personnel to know the latest software version for fan modules. If the fan module is not running the latest software version, upgrade the software version. Software version 103 is used as an example here.
    1. Run the display fan command to check the status of the fan module. The following information indicates that the fan module is not working normally.
      <Huawei> display fan
FanId FanNum Present Register Speed Mode
16 [1-3] YES YES NA MANUAL
The following information will be displayed if the fan module is working normally:
      <Huawei> display fan
FanId FanNum Present Register Speed Mode
        16 [1-3] YES YES 49% MANUAL
                 1 2670
                 2 2640
                 3 2640
      NOTE:

If the fan module creates loud noises but the display fan command output shows that the fan speed is 100%, the fan module is working normally. It may be the high ambient temperature that causes the fans to run at full speed.

    2. If the speed field in the display fan command output displays NA, the fans are not running normally. Reinstall the fan module, and then run the display version slot fan command to check the software version of the fan module.
      <Huawei> display version slot fan
      FAN version information:
      1. PCB Version : AR01DF05A VER.A

      3. Software Version : 103

Software version 103 is not the latest version and needs to be upgraded.

    3. Collecting iInformation and contact technical support personnel to obtain the latest fan software version.
    4. See Huawei AR100&AR120&AR150&AR160&AR200&AR1200&AR2200&AR3200&AR3600 Series Enterprise Routers Fault Management-Troubleshooting-System Maintenance Methods-Transferring Files Using FTP/TFTP to load the fan software version to SD1 of the router.
    5. Run the upgrade fan-software command to upgrade the fan software version.

Now you enter a diagnostic command view for developer's testing, some commands
may affect operation by wrong use, please carefully use it with HUAWEI engineer's direction
      [Huawei-diagnose] upgrade fan-software sd1:/arfan_soc_V108.iap
Info: Now Loading the upgrade file to fan-board, please wait a moment
Info: Upgrade the fan-board successfully. The new version is 108, while the old version is 103
      NOTE:

It takes about 5 minutes to upgrade the fan software version.

    6. If the fan module is removed during the upgrade or the upgrade fails, the following information is displayed:
      [Huawei-diagnose] upgrade fan-software sd1:/arfan_soc107.iap
Info: Now Loading the upgrade file to fan-board, please wait a moment
Load app get response fail! Index = 0xaa
      Load Tx fail!
Error: Load the upgrade file to fan-board fail

When this occurs, reinstall the fan module, and repeat step e to perform the upgrade again.

      NOTE:

The new fan software takes effect after the upgrade succeeds, without a need to restart the router.

  4. If the problem persists, install another fan module of the same model into the fan slot. If the new fan module can work normally, the original fan module has failed.

Before replacing the fan module, power off the router.
