Disabling RAID Boot Options

When the 5288 V3 is equipped with dual RAID controller cards, to avoid a failure to display the boot option for installing the OS due to insufficient BIOS space, you are advised to disable the other RAID boot options.

When multiple boot options are configured for a server, the system may fail to display all the boot options due to limited space of the BIOS Option ROM. To avoid the failure to display the boot option for installing the OS, disable the other boot options.

The 5288 V3 supports the following configurations with dual RAID controller cards:

  • LSI SAS3108 controller card on the mainboard, standard LSI SAS3108 controller card in a PCIe slot, and SoftRAID
  • LSI SAS3008 controller card on the mainboard, standard LSI SAS3008 controller card in a PCIe slot, and SoftRAID

The RAID controller card boot options are enabled by default. To configure the system to boot from a RAID controller card, you need to disable the other RAID boot options. For example, to configure the system to boot from the LSI SAS3108 controller card on the mainboard, disable the boot options for the standard LSI SAS3108 controller card in a PCIe slot and SoftRAID.

This topic describes how to disable the boot options for the LSI SAS3108 controller card on the mainboard, standard LSI SAS3108 controller card in a PCIe slot, SoftRAID, LSI SAS3008 controller card on the mainboard, and standard LSI SAS3008 controller card in a PCIe slot.

Procedure

  • Disable the boot option for an LSI SAS3108 controller card.
NOTE:

The methods for disabling the boot options for the LSI SAS3108 controller card on the mainboard and standard LSI SAS3108 controller card in a PCIe slot are the same.

  1. In the power-on self-test (POST) phase of the server restart process, press Ctrl+R to open the BIOS configuration screen.

  2. Select the boot option for the LSI SAS3108 controller card on the mainboard or standard LSI SAS3108 controller card in a PCIe slot, and press Enter. See Figure 9-20.

  3. Press Ctrl+N to open the Ctrl Mgmt screen. See Figure 9-21.

  4. Set Boot device to NONE and deselect Enable controller BIOS. See Figure 9-22.

  5. Press Ctrl+S to save the settings, and press ESC to exit.
  • Disable the boot option for an LSI SAS3008 controller card.
NOTE:

The methods for disabling the boot options for the LSI SAS3008 controller card on the mainboard and standard LSI SAS3008 controller card in a PCIe slot are the same.

  1. In the POST phase during the server restart process, press Ctrl+C to open the OptionROM screen. See Figure 9-23.

  2. Select the boot option for the LSI SAS3008 controller card on the mainboard or standard LSI SAS3008 controller card in a PCIe slot, and press Enter. See Figure 9-24.

  3. Select Boot Support. Then press the + or - key to change the value to Enabled OS only. See Figure 9-25.

  4. Press ESC to save the settings and exit.
  • Disable the boot option for SoftRAID.
    1. Restart the server. When the screen shown in Figure 9-26 is displayed, press Del to start the BIOS Setup Utility.

    2. Choose Advanced > PCH SATA Configuration. See Figure 9-27.

    3. Press Enter to open the PCH SATA Configuration screen. Set SATA Controller to Disabled. See Figure 9-28.

    4. Press Esc to return to the Advanced screen, and choose PCH sSATA Configuration. See Figure 9-29.

    5. Press Enter to open the PCH sSATA Configuration screen. Set sSATA Controller to Disabled. See Figure 9-30.

    6. Press Esc to exit, and then press F10 to save the settings.
