This section describes the background, definition, and benefits of the HyperMirror feature.

Background

With the rapid development of enterprises, the volume of application data has grown continuously, making it a core enterprise asset. Although redundant data backups can be easily generated, they cannot ensure that services will run error-free if the storage space of data encounters serious problems. The key to redundant data backup for disaster recovery is service continuity without data loss.

The HyperMirror feature is designed to be that key. It provides continuous protection for the storage space hosting application data and ensures uninterrupted host service operation in the face of storage failure.

Definition

HyperMirror is a continuous data protection technology that creates two physical mirror copies of a LUN for redundant backup protection against host service interruption.

HyperMirror has the following characteristics:
  • HyperMirror creates two physical mirror copies of a LUN. The data of the two mirror copies is the same. If one mirror copy fails, applications on the LUN will continue to run and hosts running the applications remain normal.
  • HyperMirror can be applied to LUNs in a OceanStor 18500 V3/18800 V3 storage system (the local storage system) and those in a third-party storage system (the heterogeneous storage system). Therefore, HyperMirror can improve the reliability of LUNs in both types of storage systems.
  • Other value-added features can be applied to LUNs protected by HyperMirror, protecting data at multiple layers.

Higher reliability and continuous data protection for LUNs

If a LUN fails, the storage system can use the physical copies provided by HyperMirror to ensure host service continuity and the integrity of data stored in the faulty LUN.

Higher reliability of heterogeneous storage systems and more effective utilization of legacy devices

HyperMirror prevents storage system incompatibility from causing LUN failure and utilizes the idle storage space of idle heterogeneous storage systems to implement data protection.
