Replacing an 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel Interface Module (Eight Ports)

This section explains how to replace an 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports).

Impact on the System

During the replacement of an 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports), the system switches services from this module (8 array ports) to other ports on this controller or on the peer controller. If available links are unable to bear the current service load, host latency increases and the system performance degrades. If there are no other redundant links, services carried by the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) will be interrupted.

Prerequisites

  • The replacement spare parts are ready.
  • The 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) that you want to replace has been located.
    NOTE:
    You can locate a component in either of the following ways:
    • Log in to DeviceManager, and go to the System page. On the System page, check the device view and locate the position of the component to be replaced. If the component has a location indicator, turn on the indicator. (For details about how to turn on a location indicator, see the online help of DeviceManager.)
    • Use the alarm indicator of the component to locate its component.
  • Services running on the interface module that you want to replace have been stopped.
  • The cable connection positions of the interface module that you want to replace are labeled on the cables.

Precaution

  • Remove the optical module from the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) that you want to replace. Insert the new 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) in the engine. After the power indicator stays green, wait for 2 minutes and do not remove or insert any optical module within this period. Then insert the removed optical module in the new 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports).
  • Remove and insert an 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors of the interface module.
  • An 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) must be replaced within five minutes.
  • After you remove the old 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports), wait 15 seconds before inserting the new one.
  • There are eight links connecting to an 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports). If you want to replace the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports), ensure that all working links have backup links. You are advised to disable the ports of the switch that connect to the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) and switch the services on these ports to backup links to avoid interruption during the replacement.

  • ESD bag

Procedure

  1. Check system status before replacement.
    1. Perform a system status inspection.

      Start SmartKit. On the homepage, choose MyTools > Storage > Parts Replacement > Inspection. The Inspection Wizard step 5-1:Welcome page is displayed after you go to the Inspection page. On the wizard, select Routine inspection and perform the inspection as instructed by the wizard.

      NOTE:
      Wait until the inspection is complete. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions. Ensure that all system components run correctly except for the part to be replaced.

    2. Check redundant paths to the host.

      For details, see Checking the Multipathing Status in the Performance Monitoring Guide.

      Contact Huawei technical support for parts replacement to prevent data damage caused by accidents during the replacement.

      You can proceed to next step only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault by taking recommended actions in the inspection reports.

  2. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  3. Optional: Check the status of the Power indicator/Hot Swap button on the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) to determine whether the interface module is successfully powered off, as shown in Figure 9-1.

    • If the indicator is off, the interface module is successfully powered off, skip to 4.
    • If the indicator is on, use a paper clip or a similar object to press the Power indicator/Hot swap button on the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) to power off the interface module.

  4. Remove the cables from the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) that you want to replace and label the cables.
  5. Remove the optical module from the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) that you want to replace.

    Grip the rubber handle outside the optical module, pull the optical module out with even force, and cover it with a dustproof cap, as shown in Figure 9-2.

  6. Press the buckle on the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) to release the handle and pull out the interface module, as shown in Figure 9-3.

  7. Place the removed 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) into an ESD bag.
  8. Take the replacement 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) out of its ESD bag.
  9. Insert the replacement interface module into the empty slot until it clicks into place, as shown in Figure 9-4.

  10. Wait two minutes and then check the status of the Power indicator on the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) to determine whether the interface module is successfully installed. Figure 9-5 shows the location of the indicator.

    • If the indicator is steady green, the power module is successfully installed.
    • If the indicator is steady red or off, the newly installed interface module is faulty, the interface module slot is faulty, or the interface module is incorrectly installed.

  11. When the Power indicator becomes steady green, install the optical module.

    Take the dustproof cap off the optical module, hold the rubber handle outside the transceiver, and insert the transceiver into the port, as shown in Figure 9-6.

    • Push the optical module to the end. If you hear a click or feel a weak vibration, the optical module is successfully installed.
    • If an optical module is installed incorrectly, it will be loose or cause a link interruption.

  12. Connect cables.

    The cable should be connected to the new 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) at the same position as to the old one to ensure proper service running.

    NOTE:

    After the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) is installed, wait 4 minutes before connecting the cables so that the status of the new module can be updated.

  13. Confirm the replacement.
    1. Perform a post-replacement inspection.

      After the replacement, on the SmartKit page, click Replaced. Perform the post-replacement inspection as prompted.

    2. Check the system status after the replacement.

      Check the system status again on the Inspection page after the replacement. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions.

    3. Check services on a host for any storage-related error.

Follow-up Procedure

Label the replaced 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) to facilitate subsequent operations.
