Replacing an MPO-4*DLC Optical Fiber (Applicable to 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel Interface Module (Eight Ports))

This section describes how to replace an MPO-4*DLC optical fiber.

Impact on the System

During the replacement of an MPO-4*DLC optical fiber, the system switches services from the fiber (four array ports) to other ports on this controller or on the peer controller. If available links are unable to bear the current service load, host latency increases and the system performance degrades. If there are no redundant links, services carried by the optical fiber will be interrupted.

Prerequisites

  • The replacement spare parts are ready.
  • The optical fiber that you want to replace has been located.

Precaution

  • Use even force when you remove or insert an optical fiber. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connector of the optical fiber.
  • There are four links on the optical fiber. If you want to replace the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports), ensure that all working links have backup links. You are advised to disable the ports of the switch that connect to the 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel interface module (eight ports) and switch the services on these ports to backup links to avoid interruption during the replacement.

Procedure

  1. Check system status before replacement.
    1. Perform a system status inspection.

      Start SmartKit. On the homepage, choose MyTools > Storage > Parts Replacement > Inspection. The Inspection Wizard step 5-1:Welcome page is displayed after you go to the Inspection page. On the wizard, select Routine inspection and perform the inspection as instructed by the wizard.

      NOTE:
      Wait until the inspection is complete. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions. Ensure that all system components run correctly except for the part to be replaced.

    2. Check redundant paths to the host.

      For details, see Checking the Multipathing Status in the Performance Monitoring Guide.

      Contact Huawei technical support for parts replacement to prevent data damage caused by accidents during the replacement.

      You can proceed to next step only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault by taking recommended actions in the inspection reports.

  2. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  3. Grip the green part of the optical fiber, remove the MPO end of the optical fiber from the optical module, and cover the optical fiber with a dustproof cap, as shown in Figure 11-1.

    Do not look into the optical port without eye protection. The laser beam on the optical interface board or from the fiber may cause injuries to eyes.

  4. Remove the DLC ends of the optical fiber from the ODF distribution box and cover the optical fiber with a dustproof cap, as shown in Figure 11-2.

  5. Take the replacement MPO-4*DLC optical fiber out of the ESD bag.
  6. Take the dustproof cap off the MPO end of the optical fiber. Point the white dot of the optical fiber downward and insert it directly to the optical module. Grip the black connector and push it forward until you hear the click or feel the vibration, as shown in Figure 11-3.

  7. Take the dustproof caps off the DLC ends of the optical fiber and insert the optical fiber into the ODF distribution box, as shown in Figure 11-4.

    Do not look into the optical port without eye protection. The laser beams inside an optical port can cause damage to your eyes.

  8. View the Port indicator, and determine whether the installation is successful.

    • If the indicator is steady green or blue, the optical module is successfully installed.
    • If the indicator is steady red or off, the newly installed MPO-4*DLC optical fiber is faulty, or incorrectly installed.

  9. Confirm the replacement.
    1. Perform a post-replacement inspection.

      After the replacement, on the SmartKit page, click Replaced. Perform the post-replacement inspection as prompted.

    2. Check the system status after the replacement.

      Check the system status again on the Inspection page after the replacement. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions.

    3. Check services on a host for any storage-related error.

Follow-up Procedure

Label the replaced optical fiber to facilitate subsequent operations.
