OceanStor 5300 V3, 5500 V3, 5600 V3, 5800 V3, and 6800 V3 Storage System V300R003

Routine maintenance activities are the most common activities for the storage device, including powering on or off the storage device, managing users, modifying basic parameters of the storage device, and managing hardware components. This document applies to the system administrators who are responsible for carrying out routine maintenance activities, monitoring the storage device, and rectifying common device faults.

Managing Application-Based Storage Resources

Managing Application-Based Storage Resources

Supporting applications including email boxes, databases, and virtual machines, the storage system automatically offers storage management best practices based on service configurations.

Two methods for creating storage resource are provided: one based on applications and the other on the procedure for configuring basic storage services. Storage resources are typically created using the latter. However, if Microsoft Exchange, VMware, Hyper-V, Oracle, or SQL Server is involved, use the relevant wizard provided by the storage system to create storage resources. Check whether any of these five applications are involved before configuring services. Table 7-1 details the two configuration methods.

Microsoft Exchange, VMware, Hyper-V, Oracle, or SQL Server

Use the relevant wizard provided by the storage system.

Follow the procedure for configuring basic storage services.

Note: If any of the five aforementioned applications are involved, refer to the corresponding chapter for configuration details.

If you use the application method to create storage resources, first ensure that there is a storage pool for that specific application in the storage system, and that all the required LUNs, LUN groups, and host groups have been configured automatically. This significantly reduces the time it takes to plan and configure and improves the efficiency of the configuration.

Since the five applications have different requirements in terms of the storage medium and RAID policies in the storage pool, the configuration procedures for the five applications may differ:
  • If there is no storage pool in the storage system or none of the existing storage pools meet the application's requirements, use the wizard to create a new one.
  • If one of the existing storage pools meets the application's requirements and has sufficient capacity, the storage system uses it automatically. Use the wizard to configure services, and the application server can use the storage sources in the application.
