Routine maintenance activities are the most common activities for the storage device, including powering on or off the storage device, managing users, modifying basic parameters of the storage device, and managing hardware components. This document applies to the system administrators who are responsible for carrying out routine maintenance activities, monitoring the storage device, and rectifying common device faults.

Managing Storage Pools

Managing Storage Pools

This section describes common operations to manage storage pools including creation, modification and deletion, and precautions for performing the operations.

Table B-15 lists common operations to manage storage pools.
Table B-15  Common operations to manage storage pools

Application servers only use storage space from storage pools of a storage system. Therefore, you need to create storage pools to ensure sufficient storage space for application servers.

A storage pool with only one storage tier does not support SmartTier.

Query status and capacity information about storage pools and storage tier information.

Modify capacity alarm thresholds.

Modify the data migration mode and capacity alarm parameters of storage pools to meet current services' requirements.

  • To configure SmartTier, a storage pool must contain at least two storage tiers.
  • Before enabling the SSD cache mode, ensure that the following conditions are met:
    • A storage pool contains the high-performance tier.
    • The data migration plan is set to Periodical.
    • The SSD cache mode has not been enabled.

Modify capacities.

If the capacity of a storage pool is insufficient, expand its capacity. If the overcapacity of a storage pool occurs, reduce its capacity to release storage space.

Available space of the disk domain where the storage pool resides can meet requirements for expanding the storage pool.

If a storage pool is no longer used, delete it.

Before deleting a storage pool, ensure that LUNs in the storage pool have been deleted.

For details about how to perform the management operations above, see the Help.
