Routine maintenance activities are the most common activities for the storage device, including powering on or off the storage device, managing users, modifying basic parameters of the storage device, and managing hardware components. Overview of Data Protection

Data protection is designed to help improve data reliability. OceanStor 5300 V3/5500 V3/5600 V3/5800 V3/6800 V3 storage system provides a wide range of industry-leading data backup and disaster recovery technologies to ensure smooth and secure service operation.

Table 1-5 describes data protection features supported by OceanStor 5300 V3/5500 V3/5600 V3/5800 V3/6800 V3 storage system.

Clone

Clone backs up data fully so that data restore is independent of source data. Data copies can be synchronized with source data in real time, providing continuous data protection. In the mean time, data copies can be independently used for services. The primary LUN and its secondary LUNs do not affect each other.

LUN Copy

LUN Copy fully copies data from the source LUN to the target LUN and transfers data within a device or between devices.

Snapshot

  • Block service

    Snapshot quickly creates a point-in-time copy of a source LUN without occupying much space. If data on the source LUN is damaged, you can roll back the snapshot to restore the data to that at the point in time when the snapshot is activated, minimizing data loss.

  • File service

    Snapshot quickly creates a point-in-time copy of a source file system without occupying much space. If data on the source file system is damaged, you can roll back the snapshot to restore the data to that at the point in time when the snapshot is created, minimizing data loss.

Remote Replication

  • Block service

    Remote Replication synchronously or asynchronously writes data generated on hosts to the secondary LUN of the secondary storage system. If the primary site encounters a disaster, you can manually set the secondary LUN to writable on the secondary storage system and let the secondary site take over services from the primary site. After the primary site is recovered, data is replicated from the secondary site to the primary site so that the primary site can provide services again.

  • File service

    Remote Replication synchronously or asynchronously writes data generated on hosts to the secondary file of the secondary storage system. If the primary site encounters a disaster, you can manually set the secondary file to writable on the secondary storage system and let the secondary site take over services from the primary site. After the primary site is recovered, data is replicated from the secondary site to the primary site so that the primary site can provide services again.

HyperMirror

HyperMirror provides two available mirror copies for local and external LUNs. In this way, even if one mirror copy of a mirror LUN is unavailable, hosts can still access the LUN, having little impact on host services. After the mirror copy recovers, it will automatically synchronize data on the mirror LUN, making their data the same.

SmartVirtualization

After a local storage system is connected to third-party storage systems, SmartVirtualization conceals the differences between these two types of storage systems in software and hardware architectures, and enables the local storage system to centrally use and manage both local and third-party storage resources. SmartVirtualization enables compatibility among storage systems and allows value-added functions, such as remote replication and snapshot, to be configured for external LUNs to ensure high security and reliability of service data.

HyperMetro

HyperMetro means that two data centers are running and can process services simultaneously, improving data center performance and system resource utilization. Mutual backup is provided between the two data centers. If one data center fails, the other one can take over services, ensuring service continuity.
