This section introduces the development background of SmartQoS. SmartQoS is an intelligent QoS control feature developed by Huawei that dynamically allocates a storage system's resources to meet specific performance goals of certain applications.

As storage technologies develop, storage devices have larger capacities. Accordingly, an increasing number of users choose to deploy multiple applications on one storage device. Non-critical applications contend for bandwidth and Input/Output Operations Per Second (IOPS) resources with critical applications, crippling the performance of the latter.

The SmartQoS feature of Huawei OceanStor 5300 V3/5500 V3/5600 V3/5800 V3/6800 V3 storage systems resolve this problem. SmartQoS is a performance management feature that dynamically allocates storage resources and meets specific performance goals.

SmartQoS enables you to set a different performance goal for each application according to the application's key performance characteristics (IOPS or bandwidth). Based on the set performance goals, SmartQoS dynamically allocates storage resources to meet specific service level agreement (SLA) requirements, especially those of critical applications.

SmartQoS extends the Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) strategy of a storage system. It is an essential add-on to a storage system, especially when certain applications have demanding SLA requirements. In a storage system shared by two or more applications, use of SmartQoS derives the maximum value from the storage system:
  • SmartQoS controls the performance level for each application, avoiding conflicts between applications and ensuring the performance of critical applications.
  • SmartQoS prioritizes critical applications in storage resource allocation by limiting the resources allocated to non-critical applications.
SmartQoS is supported for both LUN (block service) and file system (file service).
