Handing Electrostatic Sensitive Devices

Handing Electrostatic Sensitive Devices

This topic describes the precautions for handling electrostatic sensitive devices.

Observe the following precautions to lower the chances of hardware damage caused by electrostatic discharge.

Static electricity may damage the compute nodes and other electronic devices. To prevent damage, keep the electrostatic sensitive devices in ESD bags before installing them.

  • Wear an ESD wrist strap when working with a chassis with an ESD jack, especially when handling compute nodes, other modules, and optional components. Ensure that both ends of the wrist strap are in good contact (one end with the skin and the other end with the ESD jack at the rear of the chassis).
  • Do not move around. Moving causes static electricity accumulation around your body.
  • Hold the edges or frames of the devices and operate with caution.
  • Do not touch welding points, pins, or exposed circuits.
  • Do not place the devices where they may be reached or damaged by others.
  • After taking a device out of an ESD bag, install it directly into the compute node instead of putting it down. If you need to put down the device, place it back into the ESD bag. Do not put the device on the compute node cover or other metal surfaces.
  • Work with extra caution in cold weather, because the heating system reduces indoor humidity and increases electrostatic discharge.
