VXLAN Overview

VXLAN Overview

As defined by RFC 7348, Virtual eXtensible Local Area Network (VXLAN) is a Network Virtualization over Layer 3 (NVO3) technology that uses the MAC in User Datagram Protocol (MAC-in-UDP) mode to encapsulate packets.

As a key cloud computing technology, server virtualization has been widely recognized and deployed because it can reduce IT and operation and maintenance (O&M) costs and enable more flexible service deployment.

VXLAN offers the following benefits:

  • Supports a maximum of 16M VXLAN segments with 24-bit VXLAN network identifiers (VNIs), so that a data center can accommodate numerous tenants.
  • Extends Layer 2 networks using MAC-in-UDP encapsulation and decouples physical and virtual networks. Tenants are able to plan their own virtual networks, without being limited by the physical network IP addresses or broadcast domains. This greatly simplifies network management.
