Command Line Conventions

Command Line Conventions

Respect the following conventions when viewing or running commands on the command line interface (CLI).

The following example shows the format of a command line:

change storage_pool relocation_speed relocation_speed=?

show host

A command line consists of several segments, each of which is describes as follows:
  • Starting segment: general descriptor of an activity to be performed, such as change and show.
  • Second segment: performer of the activity, such as storage_pool and host.
  • Third segment (available for certain commands): attribute of the performer, such as relocation_speed.
  • Remaining segments: parameters required for the command.
Table 1-3 describes the command line conventions.

Pattern

Definition

Bold

The keywords of a command line, which must not be changed, are in boldface.

Italic

The parameters of a command line, which will be replaced by actual values, are in italics.

[ ]

Items (keywords or parameters) in brackets [ ] are optional in command configuration.

{ x | y | ... }

Optional items are grouped in braces ({}) and separated by vertical bars (|), and at least one item will be selected.

[ x | y | ... ]

Optional items are grouped in brackets ([]) and separated by vertical bars (|), and one or no item will be selected.

{ x | y | ... } *

Optional items are grouped in braces ({}) and separated by vertical bars (|), and at least one item or all items will be selected.

[ x | y | ... ] *

Optional items are grouped in brackets ([]) and separated by vertical bars (|), and more than one or no item will be selected.

For example. the change user user_name=? { level=? | action=? } command implies the following conventions:
  • The change user keyword must be as is.
  • The user_name=? parameter is required, and either level=? or action=? will be used.
  • For the level=? parameter, level= must be as is and ? will be replaced with an optional value, such as level=admin.
A correct instance of the preceding command line is:
admin:/>change user user_name=newuser level=admin

CLI Escape Characters

Some characters must be escaped before being entered on the command-line interface (CLI) because they have special meanings on the CLI. And Table 1-4 describes how to escape characters used on the CLI. Typically, the user name and password entered by a user for authentication do not need to be escaped. However, a user name and password may be escaped in certain cases.
