Adding an SSD to a SmartCache Pool

Adding an SSD to a SmartCache Pool

This operation enables you to add free SSDs to an SmartCache pool to significantly increase SmartCache pool capacity, storing more hotspot data.

  • The license for SmartCache has been imported.
  • Make sure that there are free SSDs in the storage system when adding SSDs to SmartCache pools. The storage system allows you to add SSDs authenticated by the vendor to SmartCache pools.

SmartCache, an intelligent cache feature, is used to manage intelligent cache resources. It enables users to add or remove SSDs based on site requirements. The relationship between SSDs and SmartCache pool is as follows:
  • One SmartCache pool is configured for each controller of the storage system to manage all SSDs in the engine. You are advised to configure the same number and capacity of disks for the two SmartCache pools in the same engine.
  • Adding SSDs to an SmartCache pool neither interrupts services nor compromises system performance. SSDs to be added to an SmartCache pool must be free disks and cannot be coffer disks.
  • See Software Specifications in OceanStor 2200 V3&2600 V3 Storage System V300R005 Product Description to gain the information about the capacity of the SSD that the system allows to add.
Assume that the maximum SmartCache pool capacity of a single controller is 1000 GB and the capacity of a single SSD is 300 GB:
    • If SSDs are added to the SmartCache pool for the first time, a maximum of four disks with a total capacity of 1200 GB can be added. The 1000 GB is used by the SmartCache pool. The rest 200 GB cannot be used for any purpose.
    • If 600 GB SSDs have been added to the current SmartCache pool, a maximum of two disks with a total capacity of 600 GB can be added. The 400 GB is used by the SmartCache pool. The rest 200 GB cannot be used for any purpose.

  1. Log in to DeviceManager.
  2. Choose Provisioning > Resource Performance Tuning > SmartCache > SmartCache Pool.
  3. Go to the Add SSD dialog box.
    1. In the upper part of the left function pane, select the SmartCache pool for which you want to add an SSD.
    2. Click Add SSD.

The Add SSD dialog box is displayed.

Alternatively, you can right-click the SmartCache pool and choose Add SSD.

  4. Select the SSD that you want to add.

In the Available SSDs list, select the SSD that you want to add for the SmartCache pool and click Right Arrow to add the SSD to the Selected SSDs list.

  5. Confirm that you want to add the SSD.
    1. Click OK.

The Execution Result dialog box is displayed indicating that the operation succeeded.

    2. Click Close.
