Modifying eDevLUN Properties

This operation allows you to modify the general and advanced properties of an eDevLUN.

Modifying the General Properties of an eDevLUN

This operation enables you to view or modify the general properties of an eDevLUN.

Procedure

  1. Log in to DeviceManager.
  2. Choose Provisioning > LUN.
  3. Select the eDevLUN that you want to view or modify and click Properties.

    The Properties of LUN dialog box is displayed.

  4. Modify the general properties of the eDevLUN.
    1. In the Properties of LUN dialog box, click the General tab.
    2. In the Name text box, enter a new name for the eDevLUN.

      NOTE:
      Name a LUN in accordance with the following rules so that the LUN is available to host applications.
      • The name must be unique.
      • The name can contain only letters, digits, periods (.), underscores (_), and hyphens (-).
      • The value contains 1 to 31 characters.

    3. Optional: In the Description text box, describe the eDevLUN.
  5. Confirm your operation.
    1. Click OK.

      The Execution Result dialog box is displayed, indicating that the operation succeeded.

    2. Click Close.

Modifying the Advanced Properties of an eDevLUN

This operation enables you to configure the prefetch policy and cache policy of an eDevLUN.

Prerequisites

  • At least one eDevLUN has been created on the storage system.
  • Before you modify the eDevLUN masquerading property to No masquerading, suspend services of application servers.

Procedure

  1. Log in to DeviceManager.
  2. Choose Provisioning > LUN.
  3. Select the eDevLUN whose properties you want to modify and click Properties.

    The Properties of LUN dialog box is displayed.

  4. Configure the advanced properties of the eDevLUN.
    1. In the Properties of LUN dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
    2. Configure the advanced properties of the eDevLUN.

      Table 7-12 lists related parameters.

      • Default: For regular cache access. Keep balance between read hit ratio and disk access performance.
      • Recycle: For sequential cache access. The idle cache resources are released for other access requests.

      Data write policy of a cache.

      The system supports the following write policies.
      • Resident: For random cache access. Data is retained in cache the longest to improve the write hit ratio.

      Prefetch Policy

      Data read mode of an eDevLUN. Before reading data from an eDevLUN, the storage system reads the data from the hard disks to the cache based on the preset policy.

      Possible values are:
      • Not prefetch: The storage system reads data based on the read length specified in the I/O request.
      • Intelligent prefetch: Smart prefetch analyzes whether the requested data is sequential. If it is, the data following the currently requested data is prefetched from hard disks to the cache to improve the cache hit ratio. If they are not, the data is read directly from hard disks.
      • Constant prefetch: A constant length of data (user-definable) is read from hard disks every time when the cache reads data from the disks.
      • Variable prefetch: The cache reads data from disks based on a multiple (user-definable) of the read length specified in the I/O request.

      LUN Write Policy

      The eDevLUN write policy can be:
      • Write back: Data is written onto the cache. The cache schedules the data and writes the data to disks.
      • Write through: Data is directly written onto disks without passing the cache.
      NOTE:

      Writing data onto the cache is fast. Therefore, write back delivers better write performance than write through.

      NOTE:

      The write policy of the masqueraded eDevLUN cannot be modified when created. It can be modified only when you manually take over the masqueraded eDevLUN by using the CLI.

      Masquerading

      Masquerading replaces identification information on all system LUNs with that on local LUNs so that heterogeneous remote LUNs can be taken over online.

      Masquerading types can be:
      • No masquerading
      • Basic masquerading

        Applies to eDevLUNs and replaces basic LUN information from remote LUNs such as WWN when the LUN is taken over.

      • Extended masquerading

        Applies to eDevLUNs and replaces basic as well as extended LUN information SCSI protocol version and owning controller when the LUN is taken over.

      • Inherited masquerading

        Applies to local LUNs, used for inheriting remote LUN information such as SCSI protocol version when the LUN is taken over.

      NOTE:
      • If you select Inherited masquerading, Remote Device must be specified.
      • The type of masquerading LUNs that have been mapped to hosts cannot be changed.
      • If you want to change the masquerading type, change the current masquerading type to No masquerading and change the type.

  5. Click OK, confirm the configuration of the advanced properties of an eDevLUN.

    • If the advanced properties of the eDevLUN are modified, the Execution Result dialog box is displayed indicating that the operation succeeded. Click Close.
    • If the advanced properties of the eDevLUN are not modified, the operation is complete.
