Installing Hardware

Install and connect devices in data center A, data center B, and the quorum site in sequence.

Table 2-6 describes the installation process.

Connecting Cables

This section describes how to connect the storage-to-host, HyperMetro replication, quorum, and management networks.

Dual-Controller Connection

Figure 2-9, Figure 2-10, and Figure 2-11 show how switches, controller enclosures, and application hosts are connected using cables in and across data centers.

Table 2-7 explains the cable connection principles (using Fibre Channel networking as an example).

Storage-to-host network

  • Each host has a logical connection to every controller on both storage systems.
  • Hosts and storage systems are connected via Fibre Channel switches. Each data center has two Fibre Channel switches.
  • Each Fibre Channel switch has at least N ports to connect hosts and storage systems. N = 1 x Number of servers + 2 x Number of storage systems.
  • Host-to-switch connection: Each host has at least two Fibre Channel ports to connect to the two Fibre Channel switches in the local data center. It is recommended that the two ports be on different HBAs.
  • Storage-to-switch connection: Each controller has at least two ports to connect to the two Fibre Channel switches in the local data center. It is recommended that the two ports be on different Fibre Channel interface modules.

HyperMetro replication network

  • The HyperMetro replication network between storage systems is connected by Fibre Channel switches. Each data center has two Fibre Channel switches.
  • Storage-to-switch connection: Each controller has two Fibre Channel ports to connect to the two Fibre Channel switches in the local data center. It is recommended that the two ports be on different Fibre Channel interface modules.
  • DWDM devices are recommended for data center interconnection.
  • The Fibre Channel switches are cascaded in one-to-one mode.

Quorum network

  • The quorum server is connected to storage systems via Ethernet switches. Each data center has two Ethernet switches.
  • Each controller of a storage system has one IP port to connect to one Ethernet switch in the local data center.
  • The quorum server has two IP ports to connect to two Ethernet switches at the quorum site. It is recommended that the two IP ports be on different network adapters.

Management network

An Ethernet switch is used for management. The management network ports of the hosts and storage controllers are connected to one Ethernet switch of the data center.

Multi-Controller Connection

This section describes how to connect the networks if the storage systems are scaled out (controller expansion).

Four-Controller Connection
For four-controller storage systems, connect both controller enclosures to the data switches. Figure 2-12 is an example of connecting to the data switches via PCIe ports.

  • Data switch 1 and ports on the storage devices that connect to this switch constitute the switching plane 1.
  • Data switch 2 and ports on the storage devices that connect to this switch constitute the switching plane 2.

PCIe service network between the controller enclosures

  • PCIe interface modules must be installed in slots A3 and B3.
  • Port 0 on the PCIe interface module connects to data switch 1.
  • Port 1 on the PCIe interface module connects to data switch 2.

Storage-to-host network

  • Each controller has at least two ports to connect to the replication network. It is recommended that the ports be on different interface modules.
  • The ports that connect to the replication network must have the same speed.

Other cabling principles are the same as those in the standard connection. For details, see Table 2-8.

Eight-Controller Connection

For eight-controller storage systems, connect the four controller enclosures to the data switches. Figure 2-13 is an example of connecting to the data switches via PCIe ports.

  • Every four controllers at one site form a pair with those at the peer site.
  • Each controller has at least two ports to connect to a host.
  • Each controller has at least two ports to connect to the replication network. The ports that connect to the replication network must have the same speed.
  • Each controller has at least one quorum port to connect to the quorum server.
