Configuring Applications

The active-active SAN solution is applicable to databases (Oracle and SQL), operating system applications (Windows), and virtual clusters (VMware, FusionSphere, and Hyper-V).

Configuring Database Applications

The active-active SAN solution is applicable to Oracle RAC and SQL Server databases.

Oracle RAC

To reduce private network traffic and improve database performance, the following configurations are recommended.

  • Application partition: Run different applications on different RAC instances for application isolation.
  • Data partition:
    • Partition tables according to the application types.
    • Place the data that can be read only or the data that can be read only in a certain period into the read-only table space.
  • Principles of planning Automatic Storage Management (ASM) disk groups:
    • Store different types of files in different ASM disk groups.
    • If there are a large number of group by query systems, create an independent ASM disk group for the temporary table space.
    • Dedicate two ASM groups respectively to the file where system table space and recovery table space reside and the file where user data resides.
    • If there are no special requirements on high availability, you are advised to apply EXTERNEL redundancy policy to all disk groups except the one where Oracle RAC files reside and use RAID2.0+ and active-active technologies of Huawei storage for data protection.
  • Oracle heartbeat and cluster:

    Store the Oracle heartbeat and cluster configuration information in an independent HyperMetro LUN.

SQL Server

When SQL Server databases are used, to reduce the I/O latency and offer optimal performance, set target_recovery_time to 60 according to the SQL official suggestion. For details, see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/relational-databases/logs/database-checkpoints-sql-server#IndirectChkpt.

NOTE:

The preceding operation applies to SQL Server 2012 and later.

Configuring OS Applications

The active-active SAN solution can be applied to OS clusters.

Windows Cluster

This section describes Windows cluster configuration requirements.

  • Set the timeout parameter of the cluster hosts' quorum disks to 60 seconds (20 seconds by default):
    1. Start PowerShell and run the Get-Cluster | fl* command.
    2. In the command output, check whether the value of QuorumArbitrationTimemax is 60. If it is not, go to the next step.
    3. Run the (Get-Cluster cluster_name).QuorumArbitrationTimemax=60 command.
NOTE:

cluster_name represents the Windows cluster name.

  • Set the disk timeout period of the host operating system to 60 seconds.

Configuring Virtual Clusters

The active-active SAN solution applies to VMware, FusionSphere, and Hyper-V virtual clusters.

VMware

This section describes VMware configuration requirements.

VMware ESXi 5.0 U1/5.1 Configuration Requirements

Table 2-26 lists VMware ESXi 5.0 U1/5.1 configuration requirements.

Cluster parameters

In the HA cluster advanced settings, set das.maskCleanShutdownEnabled = True.

After the cluster parameters are configured, you must disable and then enable the HA for the configuration to take effect.

Huawei UltraPath

Log in to each ESXi host.

  1. Run esxcli upadm set apdtopdl -m on.
    NOTE:

    Run esxcli show upconfig to query the configuration result.

  2. Configure the load balancing or priority policies for the paths.

Log in to each ESXi host. Run esxcli storage nmp satp rule add -V HUAWEI -M XSG1 -s VMW_SATP_ALUA -P VMW_PSP_RR -c tpgs_on. Then restart the host for the configuration to take effect.

NOTE:

You do not need to restart the host when configuring this function for the first time. If LUNs have been mapped to the host, you must restart the host.

If the OS native multipathing software is used, you must configure the initiators on both storage systems.

  1. Select Uses third-party multipath software.
  2. Set Switchover Mode to Special Mode.

  6. Set Response for APD recovery after APD timeout to Reset VMs.

After the cluster parameters are configured, you must disable and then enable the HA for the configuration to take effect.

Huawei UltraPath

Log in to each ESXi host.

If the OS native multipathing software is used, you must configure the initiators on both storage systems.

FusionSphere

This section describes FusionSphere configuration requirements.

Mandatory Configuration Items
  • Deploy Computing Node Agent (CNA) hosts across data centers in a cluster.
  • HA must be enabled to ensure that VMs can restart and recover when the hosts where the VMs reside are faulty.
  • Computing resource scheduling must be enabled to ensure that VMs can be recovered first in the local data center in the event of the breakdown of a single host.
  • A VM service network requires L2 interworking between data centers for VM migration between data centers without affecting VM services.
  • VRM nodes are deployed in active/standby mode in two data centers (one VRM node in each data center). It is advised to install VRM on local disks.
  • The FusionSphere version is V100R005C10U1 or later. See the FuisonSphere SIA for the compatible multipathing software.
Recommended Configuration Items
  • The VM hot migration network, service network, and management network are configured as different VLANs to avoid network interference.
  • The management network includes the Virtualization Resource Management (VRM) node and CNA hosts that are not accessible to external applications.
  • The service network is divided into VLANs based on service requirements to ensure logical isolation and control broadcast domains.
NOTE:

Based on the preceding configuration requirements, see the documents specific to FusionSphere to configure the virtualization platform.

Hyper-V

This section describes Hyper-V configuration requirements.

For quorum disks of the Hyper-V cluster, set the timeout parameter to 60 seconds (20 seconds by default) by performing the following steps:

  1. Start PowerShell and run the Get-Cluster | fl* command.
  2. In the command output, check whether the value of QuorumArbitrationTimemax is 60. If no, go to the next step.
