This section provides definition of SmartDedupe and SmartCompression and introduces the benefits the feature brings to customers.

Background

Data is the core asset of a company. Data increases explosively along with rapid business growth, requiring an ever larger storage capacity. The data growth poses the following challenges:
  • A great deal of business data may overlap and cause unnecessary storage device procurement expenses.
  • Device maintenance and management become complex as more devices are added. In addition, huge expenses must be spent on equipment rooms, power supply, and cooling systems to ensure proper device running.

The consequent maintenance costs of redundant data have far exceeded its value. As a result, storage system administrators are looking for a way to reduce redundant data while ensuring data integrity and accuracy.

Data deduplication and compression technologies are common data reduction technologies aimed at improving data transfer, processing, and storage efficiency with less redundant data.

Definition

To reduce redundant data and save storage space, Huawei has developed the SmartDedupe and SmartCompression feature, which deduplicates and compresses data. SmartDedupe and SmartCompression can be used separately.
  • SmartDedupe deletes duplicate data blocks from a storage system, reducing storage space consumption.
  • SmartCompression reorganizes data, saving storage space and improving how efficiently data is transferred, processed, and stored. It also ensures that data is not lost.
  • The OceanStor 2600 V3 storage system supports inline compression, that is, only the data written after SmartDedupe and SmartCompression are enabled will be deduplicated and compressed.

    When both SmartDedupe and SmartCompression are enabled, deduplication is performed before compression.

    NOTE:

    SmartDedupe and SmartCompression can only be used on thin LUNs. They function properly only if they are enabled when the LUN is created. Ensure that you have already obtained the SmartThin license.
