Removing a Hard Disk

Remove a hard disk in any of the following scenarios:

  • The hard disk has failed.
  • The hard disk needs to be replaced with a new model.
  • The hard disk has no free space.

  • You do not need to power off the server when removing a hard disk.
  • You have backed up the data on the hard disk to be removed and deleted RAID configuration from the hard disk if services are running on the system compute enclosure (SCE) where the hard disk is located.

No data preparation is required for this operation.

  • ESD gloves
  • Packaging materials, for example, an ESD bag

  1. Press the ejector release button on the hard disk. The ejector lever ejects automatically. See step (1) in Figure 6-72.
  2. Fully open the hard disk ejector lever. See step (2) in Figure 6-72.
  3. Pull out the hard disk for about 3 cm (1.18 in.) by holding the ejector lever. Wait for at least 30s until the hard disk stops spinning, and remove the hard disk from the front I/O module (FIO). See step (3) in Figure 6-72.
  4. Place the removed hard disk in an ESD bag.
