Application Scenario

Application Scenario

Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) backup is mainly used in data protection and archiving.

Data Protection scenario

Data protection is a method of preventing data loss due to hardware failures or misoperation. Source data is reserved to storage media and the reserved data can be used to recover damaged data when data lost.

Figure 13-10 shows the data protection scenario. Users use OceanStor 9000 as primary storage, and backup data to the secondary storage such as tape library through network. When data loss happens, the reserved data in tape library can be recovered to OceanStor 9000.

Archiving Scenario

Archiving means saving valuable data for future query when necessary. To improve query efficiency, you can classify the saved data.

Figure 13-11 shows the archiving scenario. When files on the OceanStor 9000 need to be archived, NDMP backup transfers the specific files to the tape library and classify the files for future query. After data is archived, users can delete the original data on the OceanStor 9000 or not. NDMP backup does not delete the archived data.
