Introduction to InfoTier

This section introduces the background, definition and benefits of InfoTier.


Users need to intelligently store and manage their data based on data types considering performance and costs. So users demand technologies that can enable them to do so.

Dynamic storage tiering can automatically store data on different storage tiers according to specific rules and intelligently manage data.


InfoTier, which is also named dynamic storage tiering (DST), can store files on storage devices with different performance levels according to the file properties, and can migrate files between devices. In this way, InfoTier fits users' specific requirements on the files processing speed and storage capacity, and ensures optimized space utilization, enhanced access performance, and reduced total deployment cost.

InfoTier focuses on specific file properties including: the file name, file path, file size, create time, change time, last access time, owning user/group, I/O count, I/O popularity, and SSD acceleration. Storage tiers in the OceanStor 9000 are based on different node pools, not on the type of disks where data is stored.


Table 3-1 describes the benefits provided by InfoTier for customers.

Benefit Description
Improving system storage performance The system migrates infrequently accessed data (cold data) to low-speed disks, reducing the occupation of high-speed disk space. The system migrates frequently accessed data (hotspot data) to high-speed disks, accelerating the system response to hotspot data. The storage performance of the overall system is enhanced.
Lowering the total cost of deployment Cold data is stored on large-capacity and low-rotational speed disks, maximizing the cost effectiveness of different storage media and reducing deployment and maintenance costs.
Managing data intelligently Based on the customized file storage policies, the system will automatically collect file properties. Data is automatically migrated according to the relationship between file properties and storage devices. Simplified management reduces costs.
