Deduplication

Deduplication

The object storage service supports object-level deduplication .

Deduplication is a technique for automatically recognizing and deleting duplicate data. When deduplication is enabled, the system automatically scans duplicate data, and deletes redundant duplicate data remaining one duplicate copy. The original duplicate data changes to the reference of the remained single copy. In this way, deduplication eliminates redundant data and saves storage capacities.

Figure 1-8 shows the deduplication process.

Figure 1-8  Deduplication

As shown in Figure 1-8, some identical objects exist in the system. The system compares objects' MD5 value, data protection level, and size to determine whether the objects are same. If they are same, redundant object copies are deleted and only one object entity remains. Other duplicate objects points to their object entities. Therefore, deduplication eliminates redundant data, greatly saves storage space, and improves space utilization.

The duplicate data scanning period is 7 days and the scanning interval is 10 minutes. Each time when duplicate data is found, a deduplication task will be automatically started 24 hours later. If any deduplication tasks cannot be finished in the current period, they will be processed in the next period.

Deduplication can be configured by invoking APIs. For details, see OceanStor 9000 Account Management API Specification.
