Connecting to the External DNS Server (Windows)

This section uses Windows Server 2008 as an example to explain how to connect to the external DNS server.

Prerequisites

You have configured the domain name of the object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs).

Context

  • The DNS IP addresses of the object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs) consist of the front-end service IP addresses of the primary and secondary nodes, four in total.

  • Two methods are available to connect to the external DNS server: conditional forwarder and delegation. Choose a suitable method based on the following conditions:
    • When the external DNS server is provided by the customer and the domain name of the OceanStor 9000 object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs) does not indicate a subdomain of an existing domain configured by the customer, configure a conditional forwarder for the DNS server. For example, if the domain name is example.com, a conditional forwarder can transfer the domain name requests sent by the DNS server to OceanStor 9000. Then, OceanStor 9000 returns the front-end service IP address of the node to the client.
    • When the external DNS server is provided by the customer, domains have been configured, and the domain name of the OceanStor 9000 object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs) indicates a subdomain of an existing domain configured by the customer, create a delegation for the DNS server. For example, when the customer has configured domain css.com, the domain name is example.css.com, create a delegation for the DNS server.
  • OceanStor 9000 supports IPv4 and IPv6 DNS servers.

Procedure

  • Creating a conditional forwarder for the DNS server

    The dynamic domain name example.css.com and DNS IP address 192.168.0.200 shown in the screenshot are only example values. The DNS IP address can either be an IPv4 address or an IPv6 address. An IPv4 address is used as an example in the screenshot. Configure values based on site requirements.

    1. Log in to the DNS server using the Administrator account.
    2. Click Start, type dnsmgmt.msc, and press Enter. The DNS Manager window is displayed.
    3. In the navigation tree, right-click Conditional Forwarders. From the shortcut menu that is displayed, click New Conditional Forwarder, as shown in Figure 22-6.

    4. Configure the conditional forwarder. In DNS Domain, enter the domain name of the object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs). In IP address of the master servers, enter the four DNS IP addresses of the object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs), press Enter, and click OK, as shown in Figure 22-7.

    5. Close the DNS Manager window.
  • Creating a delegation for the DNS server

    The dynamic domain name example.css.com, DNS IP addresses 192.168.0.200, 192.168.0.201, 192.168.0.202, and 192.168.0.203, and host names hostexample1, hostexample2, hostexample3, and hostexample4 shown in the screenshot are only example values. The DNS IP address can either be an IPv4 address or an IPv6 address. An IPv4 address is used as an example in the screenshot. Configure values based on site requirements.

    1. Log in to the DNS server using the Administrator account.
    2. Click Start, type dnsmgmt.msc, and press Enter. The DNS Manager window is displayed.
    3. In the navigation tree, expand Forward Lookup Zones. Right-click the domain name. From the shortcut menu that is displayed, choose New Host, as shown in Figure 22-8.

    4. In the Name text box, enter a host name. The host name is self-definable and cannot conflict with other host names or OceanStor 9000 domain names. For details about the host naming rule, see the following note. In IP address, enter DNS IP address of the object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs). Select Create associated pointer (PTR) record. Click Add Host. After the host is added, click Done. Figure 22-9 shows the operations.

      NOTE:

      Host naming rule: A host name can contain alphanumeric characters (a-z, A-Z, 0-9) and hyphens (-) only. If you enter any other character, the operation will fail.

    5. Repeat 3 to 4, add hosts corresponding to the other three DNS IP addresses of the object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs) one by one.
    6. Right-click the domain name. From the shortcut menu that is displayed, choose New Delegation, as shown in Figure 22-10. The New Delegation Wizard page is displayed.

    7. Click Next. In Delegation domain, enter the part of the domain name of the object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs) excluding the parent domain name. In this way, the domain name set in Fully qualified domain name (FQDN) is consistent with that of the object storage service (compatible with Amazon S3 APIs). Click Next. Figure 22-11 shows the operations.

    8. Click Add. In Server fully qualified domain name (FQDN), enter the created host name and click OK. Repeat this step to add the information of the four hosts. Figure 22-12 shows the operations.

    9. On the Name Servers page, click Next, and then Finish. The external DNS server is connected by creating a delegation. Figure 22-13 shows the operations.

    10. Close the DNS Manager window.

Follow-up Procedure

When using a domain name to access a system, you must configure the DNS IP address on the client. For details, see Configuring Domain Name Information.
