This document is applicable to OceanStor 2800 V3. This document describes the procedure for replacing the parts of the storage system in terms of safety operations, preparations, and precautions.

Replacing an Optical Module

This section describes how to replace an optical module.

Impact on the System

Replacing an optical module will cause service interruption. If any other host paths are available, replacing an optical module will not affect services.


  • A spare part is on hand.
  • You have located the interface module that houses the optical module you want to replace.

You can locate a component in either of the following ways:

  • Log in to DeviceManager and go to the System page. On the System page, check the device view and locate the position of the component to be replaced. If the component has a Location indicator, turn on the indicator. (For details about how to turn on a Location indicator, see the online help of DeviceManager.)
  • Use the Alarm indicator of the component to locate its position.


  • Remove and insert an optical module with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors of the optical module.
  • Do not frequently or quickly remove or insert an optical module; otherwise, it may be damaged.

Tools and Materials

  • ESD bag
  • Labels


  1. Check status before replacement.

    1. Check system status.

      Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check. On the Health Check page, perform inspection as instructed. For details, see Checking System Status.


      If any items fail the inspection, rectify the faults by performing the recommended actions in the inspection reports. Ensure that all other parts except the parts to be replaced are working properly.

    2. Check the status of the parts to be replaced.

      Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Parts Replacement > More > Parts Replacement (CRU). On the CRU replacement page, complete the check before the replacement as prompted. For details, see Replacing a CRU.

    You can proceed to next steps only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault as prompted.

  2. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  3. Remove the optical fibers connected to the optical module to be replaced.

    Do not look into the optical port without eye protection. The laser beams inside an optical port can cause damage to your eyes.

  4. Open the latch of the optical module, and pull out the optical module, as shown in Figure 5-66.

  5. Put the removed optical module into an ESD bag.
  6. Take the spare part out of its ESD bag.
  7. Remove the protective cap from the optical module, and insert the optical module into the port, as shown in Figure 5-67.

    • Before inserting an optical module, ensure that its latches are completely closed.
    • Insert the optical module to the enclosure until you hear a "cluck" sound or feel a slight vibration, which indicates that the optical module is in place.
    • If the optical module is not inserted properly, it will fall out or has a link fault.

  8. Insert the optical fibers into the optical module.

    Do not look into the optical port without eye protection. The laser beams inside an optical port can cause damage to your eyes.


    Insert the optical fibers until they snap into place.

  9. Observe the port indicator to check whether the optical module has been properly installed.

    • If the indicator is steady green or blue, the installation is successful.
    • If the indicator is steady red or off, the newly installed optical module is faulty, the slot for the optical module is faulty, or the optical module is incorrectly installed.

  10. Confirm the replacement.

    1. Perform a post-replacement inspection.

      After the parts replacement, return to the SmartKit page and click Replaced. Then complete the parts check after the replacement as prompted.

    2. Check system status.

      Choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check to check the system status again. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions in the inspection report.

    3. After the preceding procedure is complete, check services on the host for storage-related errors.

Follow-up Procedure

After the optical module is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
