This document is applicable to OceanStor 2800 V3. This document describes the procedure for replacing the parts of the storage system in terms of safety operations, preparations, and precautions.

Replacing an Expansion Module

This section describes how to replace an expansion module.

Impact on the System

In dual-controller configuration, the system switches the services from the port to a peer-end cascading port. The back-end port has no other redundant links, and disks in the loop all run with a single path, causing the system reliability to degrade. You are advised to replace an expansion module during off-peak hours.


  • A spare part is on hand.
  • The expansion module that you want to replace has been located.

You can locate a component in either of the following ways:

  • Log in to DeviceManager and go to the System page. On the System page, check the device view and locate the position of the component to be replaced. If the component has a Location indicator, turn on the indicator. (For details about how to turn on a Location indicator, see the online help of DeviceManager.)
  • Use the Alarm indicator of the component to locate its position.
  • You have confirmed that the cables of the expansion module to be replaced are properly connected using Huawei Storage Product Networking Assistant (
  • The cable connection positions of the expansion module are labeled on the cables.
  • The cables have been disconnected from the expansion module that you want to replace.

Before removing a SAS cable, gently push the connector of the cable inward. Then pull the plastic ring on the connector outward until the cable is completely removed from the expansion module.


  • Remove and insert an expansion module with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors of the expansion module.
  • An expansion module must be replaced within five minutes. Otherwise, the system heat dissipation is compromised.

  1. Check status before replacement.

    1. Check system status.

      Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check. On the Health Check page, perform inspection as instructed. For details, see Checking System Status.


      If any items fail the inspection, rectify the faults by performing the recommended actions in the inspection reports. Ensure that all other parts except the parts to be replaced are working properly.

    2. Check the status of the parts to be replaced.

      Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Parts Replacement > More > Parts Replacement (CRU). On the CRU replacement page, complete the check before the replacement as prompted. For details, see Replacing a CRU.

    You can proceed to next steps only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault as prompted.

  2. Wear an ESD wrist strap.
  3. Press latches on the expansion module to release the handles and pull out the expansion module, as shown in Figure 5-44.

  4. Place the removed expansion module into an ESD bag.
  5. Take the spare part out of the ESD bag.
  6. Open the handles of the spare part, insert the spare part into the empty slot, and close the handles, as shown in Figure 5-45.

  7. Connect the cables as labeled.
  8. Wait approximately two minutes and check the status of the Power and Alarm indicators on the expansion module to determine whether the expansion module has been successfully installed. Figure 5-46 shows the locations of the Power and Alarm indicators.

    • If the Power indicator is steady on and the Alarm indicator is off, the expansion module has been successfully installed.
    • If the Power indicator is off or the Alarm indicator is steady on, the newly installed expansion module is faulty, the expansion module slot is faulty, or the expansion module is incorrectly installed.

  9. Confirm the replacement.

    1. Perform a post-replacement inspection.

      After the parts replacement, return to the SmartKit page and click Replaced. Then complete the parts check after the replacement as prompted.

    2. Check system status.

      Choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check to check the system status again. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions in the inspection report.

    3. After the preceding procedure is complete, check services on the host for storage-related errors.

Follow-up Procedure

After the expansion module is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
