Introduction to ISSU

Definition

In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) can easily and rapidly upgrade system software. This method reduces the impact of system software upgrade on traffic interruption time and improves service reliability.

Purpose

On most networks, upgrading system software of a device requires the device to restart. The device restart interrupts service operation and traffic forwarding. Setting up multiple equal-cost paths can relieve the impact of system software upgrade on services. Services can be switched to the backup paths during the upgrade. This method requires the network configuration to be modified, which increases error probability and upgrade time. In addition, traffic may concentrate on one path after traffic switching and then be interrupted due to congestion.

ISSU is a mechanism that reduces service forwarding interruption time when the system software is being upgraded or rolled back. This mechanism reduces the traffic interruption time and improves service reliability during system software upgrade.

ISSU has the following advantages:
